I've had a pretty good year at work so thought I'd treat myself to a new watch.

I've got to admit that outside of the standard Rolex's and Omega's I don't really know what the good brands are. Anyway...

Having mooched around a few shops looking for something I stumbled upon a watch I really like the look of.

Panerai Luminor GMT PAM 088

http://www.paneraisource.com/watch_details/Contemporary_31.html

The best price they would do is 4000 quid.

So...

Is this a fair price?

Will this watch hold it's value if I look after it?

It is about what one would expect to pay I think yes.

Yes it will hold its value, make sure that you keep the box and papers, panerai collectors are particularly particular about stuff like that. "Hold its value" is a relative term, all watches* have an initial depreciation, if you buy a used one which has been looked after and you look after it yourself then you will lose less money.

Bear in mind that it comes with a leather strap which will need replacing every 1-2 years if worn daily, and a panerai branded strap will be expensive (over £100 at least)

*other than ones which are like hen's teeth, for example rolexes when first released like the new ceramic sub.

Any idea where I could get one second hand? (and how much that should cost?)

The interwebz is coming up a bit short.

If you're planning to free dive to 300 metres any time soon, they can cut the watch off your corpse and give it to your family. Awesome.

Could you recommend anyone in the UK?

I can get my parents to bring it over when they visit.

I've not used him myself, but Dominic Hackett is very good from what I have read in lots of other people's posts on the pistonheads forums.

watches.co.uk is good as well I think, less of a personal touch though I'm sure, and I'm not as sure about ti as I am about Dominic

Thanks Diamond, I'll give them a shout.

Trustworthy if not the cheapest.

Hackett above are well known, thats a good shout.

Watches aint my game though i do love them, if you want a diamond though :)

They are easy to come by at about £4850 and will prove a poor investment once they arrive in greater numbers

I wasn't suggesting one as an investment, but how many ADs have any in stock and don't have a huge waiting list?

You say they are available for £4850, that is still £200 over list. I havn't been looking for one but have seem them for £5.5k. If you can get one at list you can easily sell it immediately for a profit, that's a big if at the moment though. But we are digressing...

4000 was with a 5% discount. I asked for 10% and the guy pretty much laughed in my face...

I'm guessing it'll be cheaper to source in the UK than over here as all luxury items cost a bomb here.

Is there a watch you guys would recommend for around that price that would be a better investment?

I do like the style of Panerai but if it's going to shed money then I don't mind buying a Rolex or something similar. I like fairly plain faces, not too fussy.

I'm going to buy a Hamilton Khaki for everyday use.
