hi guys
right now i have purchased the raedon HD XFX 5770 1gb, and as some of you know the 5770's are faulty and so i will be returning mine.
i just wanted to ask if i should phone overclockers or XFX directly? as i dont want to waste either of their time.

also since im getting the money back i thought i might as well splurge out another 50 quid or so, but i couldnt decide which is more of an upgrade,
the GTx 460 1gb -

or just one better than my 5770-

i would like to know about them in terms of obviously perfemance but noise as well mainly i would like to know as the computer will be near the TV, but i dont think temp should be an issue with these babies should they?

P.S im a big noob when it comes to graphics cards so any one with any experience of both cards who could give me some feedback would be much appreciated-thanks dudes

XFX 5850 - £194

Personally I'd go with this. 460 is a good card though and offers cuda and physx if your into that kinda stuff.

lol @ raven, he is everywere
yeah yeah go nvidia blah blah blah !!!
physx, you dont need it, this was discussed yesterday in a thread

at the prices gibbo put up today for the 5850 it would be very very silly to listen to raven and not get the 5850 really

HD5850 unless you use you know linux as ATI is a bit of a pain for that

windows wise they are on pair or I ll soon tell you :p

GTX460 if you want cuda which I ll admit does support more applications than AMD equaling (stream)

thinking about getting a 460 myself from a gtx260 and will be upgrading the cpu at the end of the year

I currently have a 500w Antec psu, would that be able to handle a 2x460sli and a i5 setup?

+1

Always the risk of posting an "I can't decide" post. You will get a few unbiased posts, but on the whole will get the fanboys posting everywhere. Nvidia fanboys have seemed a lot worse lately for some reason.

A GTX 460 is cheaper that a 5850 and when OC beats it,thats my understanding anyway.

But a 5850 is still a very good buy you cant go wrong with either card tbh

Agreed, but you can overclock the 5850 as well. Never understood why people use that argument! :p

I love the argument that 460 can OC. Hello, 5850 can OC too  And that's above 5870 levels with small voltage increase (and very good gains in performance).

To the OP, GeForce 460 1GB is a good value card. If you shop around Gigabyte 460 1GB can be had for £170 delivered. It's a very good graphics with superior cooler and good overclocking capabilities. Reference 460 1GB can be had for just £160 inc but you'd have to cope with some cooling issues if you OC/SLI. MSI Cyclone 460 1GB is available to pick for £180 delivered. It's said to be the best of 460s but IMO is not worth the price. It's too close to 5850s territory tbf. Worth a note, none of these cards is priced competitively at OcUK (apart from OcUK Value 460 that comes bundled with games/software worth more than the price difference).

Now if you have an SLI ready board and you're willing to get another card in the future, I'd be leaning towards Gigabyte 460 1GB myself. It's a great card and even better in SLI. If your board however does not symmetrical 8x/8x SLI/Crossfire, I'd strongly suggest getting a single 5850. It is a superior card and will beat GeForce 460 in almost every application. It runs cool with stock cooler and overclocks great.

Here's a comparison for you - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=17191526&postcount=45

The 5850 @ £200 as it is now is still better "bang for buck" than the 460 1GB overclocked or not overclocked.

Get a 460 if you want physx or cuda or a multi card set up. Otherwise get the 5850.

If you cant afford the extra to get the 5850, dont bother with the 5830, just get the 460.
