Bulldozer v Sandy Bridge

I thought it was out January :S I don't know what to do now, I might just get Phenom II system as SB will no doubt cost an arm and leg and might not be overclockable. :/

If AM3 supported Bulldozer they would say, nothing to lose by tying people into the platform early. If however AM3 does not support Bulldozer any announcement would kill sales of new AM3 motherboards which their partners wouldn't be too happy about...

That said I'm not waiting a year! Plus SWTOR will be out before then and I want a new PC for that ;)

didn't someone before say bulldozer is on the AMD roadmap, socket AM3?

Cynic that I am I would say that was done for the same reasons I mentioned before or they thought they may be able to make it compatible but didn't manage it. The former is more likely as I'm sure their boffins know some way in advance how it will work and what compatibility they would like/want.

Taking into account how long its going to take for them to release it - I don't see any benefit in waiting that long before I'd upgrade to a newer platform anyways!

Think I'm more than happy with 6 cores @ 4Ghz for the next couple of years - software STILL has to catch up with that let alone 8 cores!

DDR3 only support is announced in Dual and Quad support for the server sockets (oooo - quad sounds good taking into account how much RAM I already have lol) - At least I'd only have to change my CPU and mainboard - no biggie :>

Do bear in mind that linkie I posted talks mainly about the server side of things - for most of the desktop questions the dude avoids any real answers as he clearly states - he doesn't know.

Yeah, but he knows more than he's saying, or at least it would be trivial for him to find out more. He strikes me as a bit of a jobsworth. What's the point in companies 'engaging' with the public like that, if they straitjacket their spokespeople?

In fairness if he is the server side guy then i don't blame him for keeping quiet on the desktop side of things company politics and all that. What we need now is someone from the desktop side to come out and be open to questions although if it's going to be an endless "we cannot say until release" then they shouldn't bother as that is just annoying and doing them no favours. They cannot really use the argument about competitors taking their ideas as i would imagine both main companys are so far down their chosen routes by now that altering anything at this point would cause delays.

Call me a cynic, but the fact that they haven't officially confirm or denied anything pretty much means a 'no' to me. If they could 100% confirm the rumors, they would, as it would be to their advantage.

It is also to their advantage to keep quiet if BD wont be compatible with current gen AM3 though. So there. But realistically, hanging on AM3 for the hopes that BD would be a potential upgrade is not sensible imo. BD is a totally new architecture, fitting that onto an old architecture would either compromise the performance of the new processor, or be impossible. Basically, AM3 would not be a good alternative either way for BD. Not that I care though.

Don't know if anyone else has seen this yet, but Anandtech have done a preview of a mid-range Sandy Bridge part. The performance is admirable given its position in the line-up, but we've yet to see the best part - that being its performance in applications with AVX instruction-set support (largely as they don't exist yet). Also its integrated graphics performance is fairly impressive. Unfortunately Sandy Bridge appears to be on a new socket (LGA 1155 )
