My first venture into motors... Go easy :p

So I passed my test today (woooo!!)

But I don't know much about cars and I'm looking to buy my first. Sorry if these threads pop up a lot by the way but the search doesn't seem to be working for me. I'm still deciding but I think I'm just going to get something to do me for a year until my restricted plates come off (NI) then get a "proper" car after that.

I have a budget of anywhere up to £1500 although the less the better obviously! The big thing for me, because I live in Belfast, is insurance so I'm looking something that won't skyrocket my premium but is still a half decent car.

I'm sure I've left stuff out but I'm new to all this so a bit of help would be great :) I know there's probably a million different things I could go for but I'm just looking the best bang for my buck

lotus exige, fo sho!

seriously though, Irish insurance is an utter joke so I expect anything more than 1.0l will cost you more than the value of the car?

fiesta, corsa etc..

Vauxhall Corsa Club

This is a good choice, provided that you are living in a post apocolyptical world where everyone around you is dead, all the cars near you are on fire and you are being chased by a horde of wild dogs, and the only working car is a Vauxhall Corsa Club.

In all other circumstances, this is a terrible car and you deserve to be mocked for thinking it worthy of recommendation :p

Remember this is MG ZR epic jealousy man. The Corsa C is an utterly dire car.

Check out the cars listed under group 1 here.

Andi.

OP doesn't need to subject themselves to IG1 misery.

Obviously what he really needs is a 1974 Plymouth Barracuda 425ci HEMI ...with a massive supercharger and ram-air, putting out at least 650bhp. Stick it on a specialist policy, no worries :p

Oh damn I did it again. What Fox said then. You could get a Mondeo for that too, it might be cheaper than you imagine to insure ...I don't know, you would have to get some quotes and see. It's hard to to beat the Fiesta all in all at this price point and with the running costs in mind. I don't really see a better option, especially with Belfast insurance.

Haha :D

Is it wrong that due to all the hatred I actually want to have a go in one?

The Corsa C is an utterly dire car.

What is so dire about it? I had probably the worst version (the 1L 3 cylinder automatic version) for about 18 months and it was fine, plasticky, a bit risky when overtaking, but it felt light and if you ragged its nuts off not deathly slow. I did about 15k miles in it!

All the reasons you just listed. You certainly did well there.

Well really his only criticism is the plasticyness, which doesn't bother some people. The speed of it is entirely down the engine and transmission, and people aren't forced to buy a 1 litre auto if they wanted a faster car!

edit: don't wanted?? :p

But when there are so many other cars out there, why bother?

But to be fair, I think you'll struggle to think of many sensible first cars that are not "plasticky" and slow :p.

Some people might just prefer the styling I guess?? I guess there has to be a reason cars like the 206, Corsa etc sell!

I had a 2000 Rover 214 iL as my first car, and it was an infinitely nicer place to be in than a Corsa of the same age. Was quick enough as well for a year :)
