Is Stalker worth a buy?

Best tip for the start of CoP is put your AK on 1 shot rather than auto (default 'y' button to cycle through firing modes) It ensures you can actually hit something in the vital early game.

Just acquired the F2000 and Armoured Military Suit. I'm pretty much God right now, picking off entire camps at will and hardly taking any damage or spending much bullets. Again, if you're struggling to kill even a puppy in the beginning stages, persevere, it does get better with a bit of time and work.

I have lost myself in SOC original (gave it away now and want it back to add the complete mod)

I bought Clearsky ona whim and only played it with Complete Mod .. best few hours of my gaming life ..

I'm on my 3rd play through of CoP ... and am hoping ArtistPavel finishes the Complete Mod asap ... that will be amazing

DX11 is just superb and on a rig that can handle full details .. you'll lose yourself all over again.

Can you say "Sprint! in an exo skeleton !!" Yaaarrrrrgh ! :D

Yeah, the exo skeleton was really cool. Only problem is, by the time I got it, about an hour or two later I completed the game. lol.

I liked the game, but it's not the type of game I would start all over and play it again. I kind of fancy doing it with Fallout 3 though, but I think I will just wait for Vegas :)

OL doesn't touch the graphics and instead focuses on gameplay:

Oblivion Lost 2.2

-Artifact crafting
-Blowouts
-New artifacts
-A-Life
-New weapons + equipment
-Enhanced combat model
-Better AI
-Darker nights
-Improved weather cycles
-Mutants cut from original release - Many have new powers and feel properly integrated, not just bolted-on.
-Drivable vehicles
-Ability/need to sleep
-Enhanced faction warfare
-Much much more

It even does all this without feeling unbalanced or loosing the STALKER 'feel'. It's pretty much the ultimate mod and I can't imagine playing without it. The Blowouts add a great dynamic to the game. Every time one happens you have to seek shelter and NPC's do the same. Afterwards anomalies have changed location, new artifacts have spawned and new creatures make there way into the area. The game is full of dynamic set-pieces and I've been known to spend hours in one area as it seldom gets boring.

It's a shame that it's not compatible with compete but I'd choose the gameplay enhancements over the improved graphics any day. Vanilla looks pretty shiny still anyway, especially with the lighting effects resulting from the darker nights.

I was tempted bu Oblivion Lost but it looked like thay had made it too hard!

I didn't like the fact that on the notes it said most weapons picked upped from NPC are almost useless now and the money paid by traders for your goods are reduced to a very low level.

In the early stages when you can hardly hit a barn door and finding enough ammo is hard, there was no way I fancied making it even harder!

Don't know where you heard that from. I found weapons pretty much in the same staggering as vanilla. There are just types of them! There are also more 'upgraded weapons' which is a nice touch. As for ammo, again, as vanilla. I haven't run out once though I have had to switch weapon type quiet a bit when one type of round gets a bit low.

As for diffilculty, it's smarter but not much harder. If anything, enemies don't spot you half-way across the map a they used to do! Also, you can create teams! Befriend a stalker and you can ask him to follow you. You can even outfit him. Plus, veteran stalkers can actually survive longer than 5 minutes now. There's one I bump into occaisionally who's saved my life a few times!

As for money, you do get less from traders as you say. However, there are more types of artifact to find and trade which are worth huge sums. This makes stalker a game about finding rarities as originally intended. Not a game of who can carry the most guns. I think it's great that I no longer feel obliged to crawl everywhere dragging a sack of rusty soviet equipment to sell.

From the authors release notes:

NPC's can buy anything from the actor but in very low prices.
Traders sell their supplies at very high prices, but they pay very low prices for everything
- Finding a medkit is not so easy, also it's very expensive to purchase them
- The quality of the weapons which are looted from corpses is generally very bad

That and the fact the authors recommend you play it on the hardest setting made me think this was a mod for people who had played it through once already and not virgins. No where do they say that the traders pay a fortune for artifacts to balance this out. Also i don;t even know what a blowout is yet and it sounds scary for a starter if it can happen at any time.

I wish I had known what you have said now. I might play it again with this mod once I have finished on the complete mod though.

ol is definitely for a second play through imo.

complete for a basically vanilla run though ol for the second time.

I'd agree with this 'complete'ly :p. I played the game through on release so I'm not completely new to it. Shame it's not possible to combine the two. Then again, I'm not that much of a graphics junkie.

[BTW Thanks for the heads-up regarding sig sizes Memphis. I've reduced it to 4 lines as per the FAQ. Though I can't get over how much of a coincidence it is that mine got removed mere hours after you let me know. What are the chances eh? ;)]

If it's only a texture replacer I don't see why it wouldn't work. Does the game really look that bad though? I still think vanilla looks stunning in places.

When I first played Stalker back when it first released, I found that it was okayish, but almost like a switch it became far to easy, was getting every item, money wasn't an issue, to easy to kill, bugs etc.

Is this changed via patches now? Are the later games COP, CS worth playing?

oh yeah vanilla looks good but sharper uses the same texture sizes so looks better for no overhead.

If you can improve the gfx without cost you may as well :p

I just installed it...the graphics look rubbish but Im keen to play it anyway as Ive heard you have to give it time before you get used to it. And Im willing to do that after the brainless hours Ive wasted on Modern Warfare 2...oh man dont even get me started on that...what a pile of....
