The text conversation I had with a mate over a courtesy car

I would never use a rental car as the marker to judge how good a particular model is. It will almost certainly have been abused.

That said, BMW 1 series is not comparable to a Jag XJ8.

Yeah - case in point coincidentally I had a rental BMW 1 series and it was a complete hog to drive - having driven one in better condition more recently it was very different to drive - tho I still didn't like it much.

I've only ever had the privilege of a 320d.

Has to be said its a very fine car and a fine diesel engine. Looks like the only faults the 318d had in this thread, was turning up with the wrong transmission, and not being comparable to the car it replaced.

And as for being worse than a Grandada (Edit: interestingly coincidental typo and so it shall stay) - please.

God I hate people who make me say nice things about German cars. Ugh.

Time for a shower - pass the wirebrush Howard and don't make me drop the soap again - I won't fall for the same trick twice.

I also had a 320d loaner for a month or so, coming from 6 cylinder BMWs it wasn't that bad at all really. Although I had an auto one (it was a courtesy car for my auto 325ci).

Given the blatant lying about the post editing it wouldn't surprise me if the whole thread was a fabrication/troll anyway. :)

Like a spoon, this thread is pointless. 318d is pants, oh well get over it. Your friend would still have complained if it had been a 1.8 mondeo manual or a 4.4 manual what ever. It just seems like pointless BMW bashing. As usual.

I can totally understand why someone used to a Jag would hate a 318d. Heck I much prefer my old banger to the 320d, nothing good to say about it really.

As much as I hate diesel, I think I would take even a 116d over my car. I think some people are kidding themselves somewhat.

Surely you are joking?

That has to be one of the dumbest things I've read recently. What.

A 318d is fine really, the engine might be a bit weedy but it's a fundamentally good car. When my Jag was taken from me before I even got to drive it more than a handful of miles for a couple of days last week I got a Citroen C2 ...I'd have been more than happy with a 318d instead, heck I'd have done a mini review on it. I didn't bother with the C2 as it really was just hateful, however I will say this, if you want a city car ...I've driven a lot worse ...tbh given the circumstances at the time, I was just glad to have a car.

Right, last post on the subject for me as I've quite clearly misjudged my audience. That'll be the last time I try and get away with posting something bad about a BMW guys, you win. But before that....

The car was a 10 plate 318d M Sport, which presumably explains why the ride quality wasn't exactly marshmallow soft. I can't imagine M Sport suspension package plus run-flats offering great ride quality on Burton-area roads with our myriad speed bumps and pock-marked surfaces - there are fewer craters on the surface of the Moon, and I'm not even sure that's an exaggeration. So leaving aside the question of "comparable spec" including an automatic gearbox - a small, sporty (well....ish, it was a diesel after all), firm riding repmobile is considered a "comparable" replacement for a big, cosseting, luxury saloon is it?

And no, I don't think the Granada is a better car than a BMW 318d myself. I know I'd rather have the BMW, simply because it stands a better chance of getting anywhere without something breaking (the Granada refused to start last week, which was unfortunate since we needed it to jump start his Bentley project car....) and would be a lot cheaper to fuel. However, the Granada does have very comfy chairs in the front when you're on the larger end of the scale and, yes, an automatic gearbox.

So yeah, thanks guys for going all-out against me for a big FAIL over Spelling Fun With Fox™ there (particularly you paradigm, beautifully done I must say). I realise that nothing I say will change anyone's opinion, but I really don't remember the ninja edit, not even after the first decent night of sleep in probably a fortnight. Funny how that all started because Fox brought my car into the argument - something that he doesn't tend to like others doing to him. Ah well, guess I know what our level will be from here on in. And with the rest of you, come to think of it - you all took exceptional issue to me making a pretty minor jab at one car in the BMW range. Do you honestly think BMW needs defending from me? I really don't think they do, gang.

Peace :)

I did that because of the bizarre nature of this thread - have a pop at a car somebody you knew hated for an irrational reason. Sometimes the car you drive is relevent to a thread, especially when the thread is slating a better car in every way for perculiar reasons. Sometimes it isn't. It's probably too much to expect many here to grasp that, though ;)

You'd have got the same reaction whatever the car was - Audi, Merc, BMW, etc. It just happened to be a BMW this time. It wasn't a BMW defence-session, it was a 'silly thread' defence session.

You offered zero credible or thought out reasons why the car wasn't very good.

Lets remind ourselves again what you closed the OP with..

So there you have it folks. The BMW 318d - not even preferable over a mostly sound but exceedingly scruffy Ford Granada 2.9i estate. BMW must be so proud to see these things leave their factory wearing the blue and white roundel....

I mean seriously?

A friend of mine had his '99 LWB XJ8 rear-ended last week. The other party admitted liability straight away, so no worries there. He finally had a courtesy car dropped off today, having been promised something of a similar class to his Jaguar.

A BMW 318d with a manual 'box turned up

Here's what was said about it.
