Hey guys

Mid September I will be building a new gaming and work PC. I have a budget of £1700 to work with and I could possibly stretch to £1800. I've not built a PC for awhile and I am unfamiliar with this gen of CPU / GPUs.

I only have two requests, the build is preferably Nvidia based. ATI specs are welcome coupled with good reasons. Secondly I want the build to be SLI (or crossfire) upgradeable.

I dont need a Monitor and KB / Mouse.

Thanks.

what about the OS ?

£1700 to work with and I could possibly stretch to £1800.

 lotta moolah

Very well, what will the purpose of the system be?

Gaming/Multimedia/Business/CAD work?/Photography/Video Editing

What am I saying? £1700 it will be an all singing all dancing system! jokes

is it for folding you specified Nvidia? thats the only reason primarily someone might want only Nvidia Hardware...

also cooling are you willing to annually clean a water loop? or do you want low maintenance air, but you still have to clean the fans! ;)

There are someone unnusual alternative like danamics "Liquid Metal" or these new small loops by coolit and corsair...

Didn't spend all the cash, but tbh you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between that spec and one for 1700 unless you wanted a different case etc.

there are plenty other reasons, not just folding.
IF you use linux, nvidia is generally better and more supported.
for graphic design work, rendering, etc, a lot of the software uses cuda which will work better on an nvidia card.
or if you a cuda programmer, then it would be best to get nvidia as well.
if your a 3d vision user

plenty of other reasons really :P

btw RJC, u have speced 2 cases :P

go with Redmints but swap the case to the light version, the DVD-RW to a BD-ROM and the Vertex 2E to a Revodrive

I went to town on this spec really, Blu-ray, PCI-e SSD - you could scrap/downgrade both of these and get a second 480 if it more suited your needs.

£1700??
budget to me is like £400.

OP wasn't meaning a budget build is needed (ie cheap) was meaning the budget (the max amount that can be spent) is £1700.

Also, I've noticed most specs have been with an i7 950, when did they become available to preorder? I've been looking through stuff for a while now, and this is the first I've seen them...

they've been available for a few weeks now i tihnk, they are getting release mid september i belive.

just in time for the OP's build ;)

I agree Nvidia has nice "Features" I own Nvidia GPU's plenty of the high end ones seem to die unnusually... 9800gx2 Artifacting, vertical banding and BSOD's I lost trust after owning several nvidia GPU laptops I do own a working nvidia GPU the 6600gt but that I guess was from when the manufacturing was good... ATI however I've owned an X1650, X1950, HD 4870 no problems whatsoever also my ATI laptops 200m and x1400 no problems also I'm just expressing my experience I've used a GTX260 which I had no trouble with so perhaps luck of the draw in terms of longevity... ATI did drop support for some older GPU's whereas Nvidia kept supplying drivers which shows them in a good light, Also Nvidia drivers seem to get updated more often...

says 31/08 on ocuk, and maybe I just missed them because I didn't realise I should be looking out for them lol looks like they could be good, a 930 with raised multiplier, I think I'm going to have to go and find some reviews for it now, see how well it OCs :)

i remember seeing posts about them being available september, althou they might have come forward abit.

they are basically the replacement to the 930, so the 930's will start to be reduced/phased out now, just like the 920
