Hey everyone, I have a budget of about £1000 - £1250 for a PC that will be able to produce Media productions and Games, but also survive through Sixth Form and University. I have most of the items, I was helped by a very good friend of mine. Who introduced me to these forums. His name is "D D Danneh".

This is what I have.
OcUK Basket:

And the rest of another website, which Starred when I previewed my post. I'll post the spec instead.

HDD: Western Digital WD1001FALS 1TB Hard Drive SATAII 7200rpm 32MB Cache - OEM Caviar Black - This is £74.18

Firewire port: Plexus High Speed USB2.0 Firewire Combo PCI Card 2 X USB Ports 2 x ports IEEE 1394 - £9.99

Monitor: Samsung B2430H 24" LCD Monitor Wide Full HD 1920x1080 300cd/m2 70000:1 DCR 5ms 3 Years Onsite SWAP Warranty - Gloss Black - £159.99

Processor: AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition 3.4GHz Socket AM3 8MB L3 Cache 125W Retail Box Processor - £128.29

GPU: ASUS GT220 1GB GDDR2 DVI VGA HDMI Out PCI-E Graphics Card - £54.99

By my maths, this comes up to £963.27.

Bearing in mind I still need:
Keyboard
Mouse
Headset - (Not a big issue)
W7 OS (x64) - I should be able to get this off a website that sells Software to studets at discount prices.
And the possibility of needing Cables.

I should be able to do this easily, but I am looking for any advice that you may have, I have been told on another forum that this is "Overkill" and I'm getting too much Memory, and that 4GB will be enough. I was tols that I should change the Processor (At the time I had a Hex-Core AMD 2.8GHz Processor) and I don't need as much memory on the GPU. Help, please?

Before I changed it, this is what I had. All off OcUK
98ydck.png

This was discribed as "OverKill"

What should I change, and what should I keep?

Thanks,
Nick

i would probably wait till nex june until the bulldozer and the sandy bridge arrive.
1) prices will surely decrease
2) if you buy now you will always regret that if you could have waited 9 months more your pc would haave satisfied your needs almost 2 more years.

DO NOT spend that much on an AM3 system when we all know that this socket will be worthless after 2011 (mid) .

Intel build is over budget, Mouse / Keyboard can be changed to suit.

The words were starred out as this would have been a competitor ;)

Thanks for your replys, I was starting to think that I wouldn't get one :D

Anyways. The 24" Monitor, I know a cheaper one, that is more suited and is the same size, but everything else looks good.

Thanks for telling me that the Am3 Motherboard wouldn't last long, I wouldn't have known with out you telling me. I shall consider both, but, most likely I will go for the Intel spec.

The Keyboard and the Mouse look good :D so I'll probbably keep them, if you don't mind, I'd like to run it past Dan, and I'll see what he says. But for me, it looks good :D

Thanks,
Nick

Will do :D I have to admit, I am buying it part by part, like I said. I'm on a Student allowance, so I am limmited to about £30/40 per week. But I have other funds. I do hope to have it done by Christmas, sooner if I can find a job -.-. The Monitor that I talked about is the one that I speced in the first post, I only chose it because of the HDMI port in the back.

Over budget so i fail at life

Why have you specified 2 Drives? I thought the B-R ROM would be able to handle DvDs, CDs aswell as Blu-Ray and even Burning Cds and DVDs?

I assume this £30 a week is EMA? It got me my PC ;) Too bad the £100 bonuses are gone :(
What programs would you be using for media production? Something with more cores and RAM might be more useful. A friend of mine who did Media A levels quickly filled up 4gb RAM with Sony Vegas, and the lag wasn't pretty :(
mediabuild2.png

I have to admit I do like the look of that. And yes, it is EMA, and I'm pretty sure I do the the £100 bonuses, although I will have to check, if I do, that would be a MASSIVE help. As I'd not considered that :P. Like I've said before, I have the monitor that I want, and yes, I do use Sony Vegas. That's the main reason I wanted 8GB. My only problem is next year the AM3 Socket becomes un-upgradable, so if I wanted/needed to replace the CPU I would need to change the Motherboard. But other than that I think it will still most likely be the Intel setup, with your Graphics Card.

Thanks,
Nick :)

The Intel build will help with Sony Vegas better than AMD, 6gb RAM should hopefully be enough. Bare in mind Intel is also changing sockets next year from 1366 to 2011, so no upgrade path there too. AM3 CPUs will still work in AM3+ motherboards apparantly.
And as quoted from my EMA letter:
You should be aware that from 2010/2011, bonus payments no longer form part of the EMA scheme.

In RJC's builds there are two disk drives :p I think he meant that.
