Just curious really - I've never been into the modifying scene and I'm certainly not about to go slammin the accord to the deck but Ive just seen a mk4 golf GTI parked outside that has obviously been lowered.

He had 18 inch wheels on it (wan li tyres y0) and with the lowered suspension there was only about an inch gap between the wheel and the arch. He had parked with the wheels at an angle which made me wonder - surely if he goes over a bump on a corner that causes an inch of suspension travel, he's going to put a big dent in the arch? Surely an inch isn't a lot of travel, even on stiffer suspension? So what gives?

You make the suspension harder and reduce the maximum possible travel. But if he has Wan Li tyres on it, it's likely a bodge job anyway so probably will hit the arch if really given a good bump.

Sounds horrendous, but this had standard ditchfinders on what looked like OE VW wheels and the arches weren't any wider than standard either. It was the position of the wheel so close to the arch that made me wonder...

gap between tyre and arch = weak.

its the law for a gti to be low, you cant get your fingers between the tyre and arch at all on the front of my mk4.

the mk3 is a tad higher, but thats for practicality

no arches have been touched at all but ive had to put a TT arb on the mk4

As in playing loud music, busting a rhythm :)

Oh I see. You yoofs and your slang

Nah he wasn't there, just parked next to me. Think it had the standard stereo in it, but he did have a parking ticket sleeve as a tax disc holder.

I lowered a car once. Will never do it again. You live and learn.

Raising is where its at.

Good thought, wonder if I could make the accord more wallowy.....

I didn't stop to measure it, but it definitely looked like bump with the wheel turned would result in a bent arch and a dead wan li

Doesn't really happen, the caster will cause more camber on turning, and the suspension compression from the roll will also cause more camber, thus it won't hit.

If you are drifting on the other hand, everything is backwards, and this can happen :p

Its just i think its vital you have the big stereo to go with that low look.

Aaah that makes sense, thanks :)

Mine used to just rip the hell out of the tyres and they would eventually pop.

No different to the bottom of the car getting torn up on stuff.
