Tough jobs market?

I started looking for a job 2 weeks ago, finding it very tough going. The last 3 jobs I got were the only ones I applied for and got them within a week. I've now applied to over 20 and seen only 2 replies to say they were filled. I've got 9 years IT support experience :(

It's a very tough job market. I've been looking for a permanent position since May and have my first interview next week. Just keep your head up, a lot of us are going through the same thing.

OP, have you been hiding under some massive rock for the past 2 years or just been in full time employment?

You only started 2 weeks ago! I know of fully qualified people looking for work for months!

2 weeks = nothing

If you are in a rush to get a job, join an agency and do some contracting.

If you can wait, then wait, 2 weeks is nothing in the grand scheme of things.

Not that any of us want to play the "I told you so." card, but how on Earth have you not realised how bad it was until now? Did you just think that the rest of us were making it all up when we were complaining that we couldn't find work for - in some cases - over a year?

The I.t. sector seems to have picked up a bit I think, there certainly seems to be more jobs advertised... a website I use seemed only to have one or two service desk type jobs a week before Christmas in my locale but now it seems more like one or two per day.

Still its mainly agency stuff but it seems better than it was.

I've been looking for a permanent job for months and temp for two months. I'm just trying to stay positive and be as proactive as possible, although I do have days where I struggle to even get out of bed and be motivated to try continue.

Unfortunately it is a bleak time but slowly picking up. It took me 10 months after leaving uni/finishing my fixed one year term position to find another full time job (with a couple of temping jobs within that time). Although I still had to go through the interviews, all of those jobs partly came down to a friend/contact/associate - managed to get my current job after seeing 'click here if you are a graduate and need a job' on my friends Facebook. Good luck - you will get there eventually :).

I just got a job today :P

They chose me over all the other people who applied who had years of experiance i had none...

Managers said they saw something in me when i came for the interview! It was so random how i applied and so cool how i just got it today after 3 interviews!

:P

Dont worry bro you just need to go and be more hands on. Online sites are not the main thing to do. Go into a store be friendly get to know the staff and then if they tell you about vacancies apply and just try n be as friendly as you can most stores will love social people n you get so far lol.

Some managers are emotionless pricks so its hard to relate to them on a personal level and get any kind of response.

Doesn't really work like that with IT jobs, retail work it can do though.

OP....Where abouts are living? County wise etc?

Scotland

I've been self employed for 3 years trading shares, not reliable enough income lately.

I thought I could just walk back into an IT job. I've even applied to ones I could do asleep.

I applied to a "farmfoods" server support job, it had 272 applicants.

I knew things were bad from my investing, but when the reality of actually finding a job hits, you realise it's worse than the economists are saying.

Yup, it is bad - make no bones about it. I'm currently updating my CV as this contract ends late October. A girl I've been chatting up doesn't quite understand how bad it is and why I'm 'obsessed' in focusing on a job rather than going out to enjoy myself. Unsurprisingly she works in the public sector..

This week sees the applications going out..

Depends on the type of work I guess, consider applying for something to put you on until you find the IT work you are looking for. I found jobs in sales based roles incredibly easy to find earlier this year, I was out of work for a few weeks on two occasions but after applying for 10+ positions a day I ended up with multiple offers both times so could take my pick.

I made it my goal to apply for at least 1 job an hour at the very least and be doing nothing else but looking until at least 5pm every day.

Loving the 3k a year pay rise (+bonus) over my old job and 13 weeks a year off :D

(not so much the 9pm finishes though)
