I married an American girl, came over with a K1 visa, married and then applied for a 'change of status' to remain here.
I think what there is a bit of confusion over permanent residency and citizenship. I have permanent residency, not citizenship, that requires years of work. I will (hopefully) get citizenship, and as you say, not everyone gets it, but for now permanent residency is what I have, if I break any laws then I can be deported, never to come back

Oh, imagine if you're just days away from gaining citizenship and then something happens and you get wrongly charged for a crime.

Nice one though, hopefully something I will get later in life.
