Im looking for opinions on a new car. I have just started up my own business due to redundancy and as such have handed back the keys to my 07 e220 avantgard (diesel auto).

I am looking at some thing that will offer me comfort to cruise around, swallow the odd motorway journey and cost me very little over the next 6/12 months while I get my business off the ground.

Suggestions so far (with examples) are:
2000 Honda Legend 3.5 link
2000 Audi A6 2.4 link
2000 Peugeot 607 3.0 link

All cost less than 3000, have a reasonable specification, are 10 years old and have circa 80,000 miles with similar levels of performance and refinement.

I have driven the A6 and 607, but not the Legend. Does anyone have any opinions on these or similar cars please?

I know these are quite boring cars compared to some on here, but many of my freinds my age are getting excited about people carriers - so Im comparatively cool all things considered. :D

Links don't work but a 10 year old Audi A6 doesn't scream cheap to me.

Any reason your not considering dropping £2k on a 2002ish Mondeo/Accord/Etc...?

Lexus LS400 for £1500 quid, if you want a grandad-spec runabout. Just make sure the belt's been done at some point, or face a £400-600 quid bill.

Will those above cars really cost very little to run?

I would have thought something like an Accord or Mondeo will be cheap...not larger 'executive' cars.

You tell me for 2k what else comes close to that, except a Jag, but this fella needs reliability :)

I'd rather have something like this. Or if you don't mind slightly higher milage, a newer one like this.

Even though I am no Grandad (my Daughter is only 13 FFS!!) I've already owned one and want another..... :o

I agree with paradigm - They are not cheap to run though.

Not much really, I think with reliability in mind you're spot on. A Jag to fit this budget is going to be an X300 (or an early S-Type) and probably a high miler at that, so reliability may not be all that great. And if he bought an XJ40 ...ouch.

morning all and thanks for the help.

I do like the S-Type but heard some horror stories and the Lexus is 400 is a much older generation of car that I am looking at and it shows. I have looked at the BMW/Mercs naturally, they do get snapped up quickly these days!

Im thinking that a Honda with good history will be the more bullet proof car. Im in two minds over the image of that one but it will be ten times more reliable than the Pug and half the cost of the Audi should there be a problem.

I don't see cars of the mondeo/accord etc class wouldn't fit absolutely all of your requirements better than big barges. They'll swallow motorway miles and cost you a lot less than the cars above

I had a 07 Mondeo as a loan car last Autum and wasnt impressed, Im looking for size and comfort.

Volvo S80 is a good call, will look into Volvos a little more.

Cant think of anything else that isnt 4x4 or MPV type of car?

The only car in that list that will cost you very little except for fuel is the Honda Legend.

Old German prestige cars dont cost very little.

2nd part is right, first is wrong tbh. The engines in the Legend can munch head gaskets, the boxes are a little too delicate and there is a whole world of electrics to go wrong that not enough people know enough about.

The nature of the the ***** prestige market is this: It costs little to buy, it CAN cost little to run but don't bet on it. My 728 cost 1200 to buy and just over half that again in 14 months - suspension, alternator, battery... The 528 hasn't cost a penny in 8 months. Any car can cost big money to fix and look at it this way: Your cheapo ***** presitge dies a horrible death, you flog it for £500 on ebay to a breaker and buy another. Your nice, expensive car goes badly wrong, you've gotta fix it.

If you want a proper granddad car, buy on history, quality and keep a wad aside to fix it when it goes wrong.

Edit/ I do realise that the legend will probably be cheaper to run than a 7 series, but that's like saying a coke habit is cheaper than a crack habit
