460 AMP or 5870 ?

why? will you explain ? ;) im a bit slow

the 460AMP is a few £'s cheaper and its core clock is just over 200mhz faster
and its memory clock is almost 700mhz faster?

wot am i missing?:D
A GTX460 1GB at 810MHz is only around as fast as a 5850...whereas the GTX470 at stock speed 607MHz is around 10% faster than a 5850 at stock speed 725MHz at 1920x1200 4xAA. When it comes to GPU speed, it's not just about number, but the architecture/design as well.

You're off your trolly a 460 1GB is about 95% of 5850 at stock.

Pushed it becomes about 95% of a 5870.

^^
if thats normal 460s it would be nice to see if a 460AMP
pushed could get a little more than a stock 5870

it could save £65 for people on a budget:) and -the ati driver problems

Em...no, a stock GTX460 1GB is more like 90% of a 5850 base on the data from AnandTech:
http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18176548&page=2

Tried to find some benchmark for the Zotac GTX460 AMP, but only found comparison for 2560x1600 4xAA:
http://www.hardwareheaven.com/revie...0-amp-graphics-card-review-bad-company-2.html

And look at the Palit GTX460 Sonic Platinum, which factory overclocked at 800MHz:
http://www.techspot.com/review/299-palit-inno3d-geforce-gtx-460/page6.html

Which pretty much prove what I said about the GTX460 1GB at 800MHz is around as fast as a 5850, if not little bit behind

And you are missing the point. If the OP was to spend £225 on getting the factory-overclocked Zotac GTX460 AMP, he'd be better off getting the GTX470 for the same price, which at stock speed 607MHz is would not only be faster than the pre-overclocked 460 AMP, but would have more headroom left for overclocking. For GTX460 which already reached 800+MHz...the amount of room left for further overclocking depend on how good the particular chip is...could be as little as another 30MHz (840MHz), or could be as much as another 140Mhz (950MHz) with voltage tweak; but the GTX470 could still do as little as another 150MHz (750MHz), or as much as another 250MHz (850MHz).

GTX470 is simply the best choice at the moment if considering price, speed AND overclockability.

What marine said, there's no point in spending a lot of money on the pre-overclocked amp edition when you can get a GTX470 for the same price, clock the nuts off it and get a huge chunk more performance for no more money.

As to clock speeds, you can't compare ATI cards to Nvidia using the figures as the two cards are completely different architectures. For example, ATI's cards can overclock a lot higher than Nvidia's cards, but don't get such a performance boost clock for clock

in simple terms the 470 does a lot more per mhz than a 460 does because the GPU has more workers soldered onto the card

Buy a cheap 460 now, overclock it to near 470 performance, and then buy a second 460 when prices fall or when you need more performance (so long as your motherboard supports SLI).

If your mobo does not support SLI, the 470 will probably be a better lonf ter4m bet.

Obvious troll is obvious. I'm happy for your 460.

I doubt an average 460 overclocks beyond 900MHz which would be required to keep up with a stock 470 performance.

A single 470 is the best card with this budget.

can get my 460 to 800mhz on stock voltage, slight voltage tweak and i went to 840, didnt try higher.

they oc stupidly well it seems

Value too be had is either with the 460 or 470. Value and Nvidia could rarely been said in the recent past, but it is the case at the moment. Not like ATI is bad value at the moment with the HD5850 but with the 470 faster for not a great deal more and a 460 almost as fast while considerably less, Nvidia is the logical choice.

Would not consider the 5870 at the moment considering the 5850 can overclock to and surpass the 5870 stock speeds.

Ummm, the 460 seems to be having a fair few problems itself, generally more serious problems like not being compatible with certain motherboards etc.

Op 470 is the best choice at the mo on that budget, second is the 5850.

I would not suggest getting anything over a GTX470. the GTX480 and 5870 are far too expensive to justify getting them at the moment. Both cards are fast but there's no point in shelling out an extra £50 for the 5870 or an extra £150(!) for the GTX480. There is simply not enough of a performance increase to justify buying at those price levels
