Karl Pilkington - An Idiot Abroad

I'm 100% sure that Pilkington believes his Monkey stories.
For instance a monkey not only joined the Fire Brigade but climbed up a ladder and carried a human down and then went home and made love to a wife of one of his colleagues.
Get real - it's scripted.

Well, just because it isn't scripted doesn't mean it's not a work of fiction.

Don't start the scripted/not scripted argument again. It really doesn't matter.

Of course it does.
It shows what absolute comedy geniuses they all are.

Perhaps when the word scripted is used I don't mean that every word has been wrote down on a piece of paper like Little Britain and then they repeat their lines.
When I say scripted I mean they have sat down and decided which ideas to run with and which ones to make more unbelievable rather in a Derek & Clive way.
eg hey Karl, do you know when you were talking nonsense about Chameleons, expand on it and get something in about x & y.

Well, in that sense, everything on TV is scripted. Even improvisational comedy shows work off an idea. But that's not what people think when using the term scripted.

I like Karl Pilkington, what I don't like is that every time he says something Ricky Gervais has to laugh like it is the funniest thing he has heard ev0r.
Yeah, this and the fact that Gervais seems to spend all his time insulting him on all the shows I've listened to. We get that he's stupid Ricky, you don't need to drill it into us. If anything, you should be thankful for the fact that you manage to ride on his popularity so much.

Oh dear

So just to clarify all this time you've just been confusing something being scripted with something being structured? :p

Scripted: No
Structured: Yes

We get it dmpoole. You think it's scripted. However.. theres no definitive proof. So now everytime someone disagree's that its scripted, can you please refrain yourself from popping up every 2 seconds to try and argue against it. It really doesn't matter, watch the show, and keep your opinion to yourself.. because you've already stated it once in this thread.. so why the need to state it another ten times.

Not really.
It is scripted in a sense that things are worked out before they hit record.
Karl has silly idea (or one of the other 2) and then between the three of them they 'script' it out and more than likely write the main points out which he needs to get in.
Gervais laughs pretending it's the first time he's heard it and so on.
Brilliant.

You can tell by listening to the very original XFM podcasts how it transformed into a slick comedy show.
If some people still believe that everything that comes out of Pilkington's mouth is completely spontaneous and he believes some of the outlandish nonsense then there's no hope for them.

Duh, because people keep replying and you don't need proof it's 'scripted' or worked out - you can hear it.
Some of it is way too outlandish and goes too far.

This does indeed look good.

I've always thought that the monkey news was Karl's way of getting back at Gervais for all the abuse he gets from him. I think this because Steve always insists that Ricky lets Karl finish no matter how far fetched it is and if I remember correctly has even shut off Rickys mic.

As for the scripted debate, in my opinion the original xfm radio shows were real, and the podcasts were just their way of introducing Karl to the world and getting him to retell some of his classic stories.

Have been looking forward to this new show for ages, and also their new sitcom with Warrick.

I'd rather see more of Steve Merchant to be honest, I always thought Karl was the least entertaining member of the XFM trio. His droning mono-tonal voice just grates on me and for me it was Ricky and Steves reactions to his nonsense that made it funny.

Still, I will of course be checking this out.

If some people still believe that everything that comes out of Pilkington's mouth is completely spontaneous and he believes some of the outlandish nonsense then there's no hope for them.

You seem to be confused to the way they have created the format of the show, which is based on the spontaneity of the 100% unscripted Karl, but giving a structure and direction to the conversations so it isn't just a series of disjointed ramblings as Karl has proven several times in the past he is capable of holding 10 minute conversations with himself, often sending himself off on a tangent.

If you go way back to the earliest XFM outings, Karl says maybe 1-2 things per show, rather sheepishly put forward, it takes them a very long time just to get him to a point where he is having the odd 1 minute conversation with them in between songs. Eventually they make it the Karl Pilkington show, where like the podcasts it just entirely revolves around them throwing topics at him and getting his views, they even have to stop talking to him whilst songs are on just to stop him wasting such gold off air.

So in producing a format for a show, setting out way they will be discussing usually within the confines of a chosen topic, all they are doing is bringing a bit of structure... not scripting.

Plus Karl does believe his nonsense because you have to remember where he gets his information, he carries around books about freakish deformities, he subscribes to the Fortean Times, if he wants to check the latest news he isn't hitting the political section of the Guardian, hes on the quirkies section of Ananova. Then remember he isn't really reading nor comprehending the complete stories, so they're having a conversation with a man whos head is crammed full of his own extrapolations of mental stories hes only half remembered.

Classy ad hominem btw.

The general progression of the show is obviously scripted but all the banter is clealy off the cuff, they start with general ideas and then just go. There is no way they'd have the time or inclination (they were paid next to nothing for the xfm shows) to script over an hour of decent chat every week for the years they did it, you might have picked up that they've been incredibly busy recently, also Ricky is lazy

It's on now btw

Didn't realize this was a 'preview show'.

So they are just going to show these for another two weeks before the actual show starts?

Indeed. It generally took them the best part of a year to write 6 x 30 minute shows for The Office or Extras.

The preview was brilliant. Can't wait for the series.
