I was thinking about getting SkyHD but wiki says half the HD channels are broadcast in HD / upscaled SD.

With paying £30/month inc. £10 for HD im a bit concerned a lot of programs will just be 576i in a HD container.
I already have FreesatHD which already has BBCHD & ITV1 HD.

I was going get the Variety & Knowledge packs, mainly for Sky1, SyFy, Discovery & will be very disapointed if their content is mostly from an SD source.

Oh, does anyone know if i'll be able keep my existing Freesat which is using an old Sky digital dish/single LNB?

much thanks

£10 a month charge for HD gets dropped in the next month or two.

Wait.

Source?

Haven't heard of anything on DigitalSpy or AVF.

I highly doubt it is going. Considering the amount of subscribers to HD over the last 2 years, it would be stupid of them to drop it atm.

Current virgin boxes are hellish, wouldnt touch them. I'm subjected to them everytime I go to see the parents! Tivo boxes sound interesting though.

The new Samsung boxes are faster with Virgin.

And Virgin will be rolling out TiVo boxes very soon, which will probably destroy Sky for usability.

Explain?

Tivo was one of the worst things ever released over here. i used to sell them and shifted about three in 2 years.

Doesnt the current sky HD box have the same functions as Tivo did?

Ive had a second HD box fitted yesterday.

The second/new box i have is a lot smaller much bigger HDD and the whole system menu is so much more responsive than the HD box i have downstairs.

Its seems SKY have improved the HD box over the last 12 months

i'll hold off then as i've tryed the cable boxes with NTL just before they became virgin media and hated them. Friends with VM say they are still no better which prompted my question.

I have had SkyHD since it's inception and have been very happy with it. The HD material is of an excellent standard in the main.

Recently we have had the addition of LivingHD which really shows the difference in quality between the SD and HD channels.

I highly recommend it, especially after experiencing the Virgin Media HD whilst on holiday. Sky is far superior.

i always found the old cable boxes very slow. Is this still the case ?
No the new Samsung boxes are excellent and in my experience much better than all the previous cable boxes. I've had cable for the past 10+ years and there have been some bad ones.

I changed to Sky HD about 18 months ago and just found the whole experience to be very poor and sub standard. Box was slow and unreliable, any kind of weather would interupt channels, especially HD ones that would freeze and get blocky, etc. Was literally counting down the days to cancel my 12 month sub and go for the Cable HD instead which is overall twice as good, especially the on demand stuff.

Also if you watch footy there's things like Sky charge £10 for the HD channels per month + £9 per month for ESPN HD, so £19 extra. All that's free on cable. Then there's Broadband which is much better aswell.

The TiVo that is coming to Virgin is similar to that of the recent TiVo Premire in the US. Tons of features that you can check out yourself on wiki and TiVos own site.

Basically improves on every aspect of what we are akin to with Sky+ and V+. The internet features alone make it worth having along with the search features.
