The VAT rise.

yay, more increases in fuel prices (indirectly). Don't know why I bother any more. Every year something gets more expensive, but my salary/wages never seem to match these other 'cost of living' rises. Come to think of it, I don't know anybody who has had a pay rise in the last 10 years that has been in line with cost of living/inflation etc. :(

You must be living in a tiny bubble, then

I guess that's a reference to not knowing anyone who has had a living wage increase in line with how much everything costs....? I say guess, because such insightful remarks leave very little in the way of speculation

Well excluding the last couple of years, average earnings had rised above and beyond inflation (inflated living costs) - so yes, it is odd you haven't known anyone in then last decade who has not had such a rise

the thing with the vat drop to 15% most placrs didnt even use it just used the original price but made out it was only 15% vat
it was only companys selling things that got helped out

Which was in fact totally the point.

I bet our stupid company will make us raise the prices by exactly 5%, meaning everything is an awkward price again. Wargh

Don't mind me... it's monday.
I suppose most of the companies I worked for have been of the same ethos then: remuneration was all about time served and had no links to 'average' pay or skills or anything else.

I'm definitely not looking forward to it. I'm VAT registered so while most people I invoice can claim it back, it makes me look more expensive and will make it harder to put my prices up next year.

I also do a lot of driving, so again while I can claim the VAT back it will hit my cash flow each week. One benefit I can see is that consumer confidence will stay low so interest rates are unlikely to rise or if they do, only by a little.

But worst of all. Beer is going to go up.

Right, so the VAT thing is a fair concern on the house buying front if you anticipate high solicitors fees. I stand corrected.

There could do with a bit of a change when it comes to what is and isn't VAT rated. I am struggling to see how all clothing would be considered a luxury item, the weather and law tends to make it pretty much essential...

That's a good point, as to go outside they are essential (as proved by various case law) and therefore you'd think this should be mirrored by their VAT group. I suppose you could argue it isn't essential to leave the indoors and you can be naked inside (to a point)... Failing that, just dress in baby clothes!

Didn't notice the drop, unlikely to notice the rise when it comes to VAT, and it's easily avoidable by altering spending habits.

I hope the country never forgives Labour for what they have done... Sadly as this is the third time in a century and idiots keep voting them back in, I have my doubts....
Award winning post.
