I just saw this (happens that I grew up in Eastleigh). Personally I can see both sides of as valid. It's wrong that they got a discounted rate for a journey they didn't take; but being fined for getting off early is also wrong.

I think they should have had to pay the rest of the fare for London to Eastleigh.

What does everyone else think?

How can they fine them for getting off early

It would be like a resteraunt charging you extra if you didn't finish your meal

Well tbh the train company does have a point..if its a heavily discounted ticket then they should have stayed on for the rest of the journey.

Wonder what their reasons where to get off 2 stops early...it seems obvious enough that they werent going to travel all the way to london by the looks of it.

Stupid system is stupid.

I could understand it if they stopped off for a look around and then boarded another train to complete the journey at a later date but that doesn't sound like what happened.

They were travelling to Southampton FROM London.

On a side note, is this allowed for the funfares offered from national express? Im sure those fares only exist when going to certain destinations ie city centres.

surely not legal ?

sounds like the numbnut who checked there ticket on the platform thought that they where going to try and board another train and that the couple never denied this. communication fail

anyway i would have been getting off the train because i was ill

The article said:
A spokesperson for Stagecoach, which owns South West Trains, said the couple had been fined because they were using discounted tickets, costing £6, which do not allow passengers to break their journeys.

They broke the terms and conditions of the ticket. Fair play.

Complete bullybull and just train companies taking us (one again) for a ride. That's then wanting the best of both worlds (the train company I mean) deck em all. Can't believe that they could be allowed to get away with this.

Personally I would have wound up my keyboard and bashed them in the face with it :p

Doesn't say if they were going to get back on and go all the way to Soton?

If they were going to do so, then well they broke the terms... but that fine is stupid. Stupid stupid stupid.

If they just got off because they felt like it. Who gives a ****?

I'm a bit lost here, why did they hand their tickets over?

Edit: And private enterprise being able to fine people for breaching contract, wtf?

It's a clear abuse of their own T&Cs, the regulations obviously weren't put in place to stop people from using the train less than they have paid for.

Illegal fine tbh. This wasn't a break in their journey, they just curtailed it. Sure, they should have to hand their tickets over, but no way they should be fined.
