After buying a few new bits i didnt need (mis diagnosed mobo fault) I have a choice which would be quicker;

2.8 P4 775 800fsb
2 x 1gb ddr 400 Single channel
Intel Mobo

3000+ Amd64 939 SD
2 x 1gb ddr 400 Dual Channel
Gigabte Mobo

Some people might think i'm going for AMD for the purpose of having an AMD system, but AMD is the clear logical choice.

personally i would go with the Intel out of those 2

socket 775 might be dead, but its still being used by a lot of ppl, and you can still buy new cpus and such for them.

socket 939 on the other hand has been dead a long time.

both would give simlar performance, and neither can really be upgraded by much, so tbh, it doesn't really matter which one

I think the hardware is fine for what I need to do and would still have been happ on the 939 computer set up if the psu didnt bugger up, no need to spend that sort of money tbh.

Outdated doesnt mean useless :confused:

If you would still be happy on your 939 setup but the power supply blew, why not just buy a new PSU?

Gave signs of mobo issue as psu seemed to be fine voltage wise using an altimeter and shorting a pin. Not sure whats wrong with it tbh. Also only cost me £23 in total for 2nd hand cpu, fan and mobo.Spent more on a new PSU :(

Much the same to be honest! Either system, dispite it's "age" will meet your needs :)

I would plump for the AMD system with the better MB and dual channel RAM

you would probably only see a difference between the two in benchmarks i think, but depending on what the intel board is it may be easier to drop in a core 2 duo or possibly even a quad at a later date for an upgrade so would go with that depending on the board.
