Why is driving so expensive ...
£50 provisional
£200 for ten lessons
£200 for tests.
£500 for first car
£2600 for insurance

My wallet surely is going to be empty :(

I Only work for Domino's XD

That is cheap compared to what it cost me.

Do you plan on passing after 10 lessons?

What car is it? That insurance seems stupidly high.

It doesn't stop there either.

£££ for consumables (tyres, oil, filters, plugs, wipers)
£££ for servicing and MOT
£££ for Road Fund Licence
£££ for fuel.

Cars are expensive.

One thing my mate did in school.

Did his driving test etc, and bought a moped, he used that for going to/from work/school, cheap to run etc and then years later when he bought a car, he already has his driving test, so no need to faff around later in life to pass that.

1 - you would be lucky to pass after £200 worth of lessons.
2 - if you are paying £2600 for insurance you bought thr wrong car.(or perhaps this is something to do with driving on a provisional license in which case - unlucky, I guess that would kind of mate 1 a moot point as well.

Oh and dont forget the cost of upgrading your provisional to a full license once you have passed.

Oh and as has already been said the realy cost of motoring is in the upkeep of the vehicle, and seeing as your car cost £500 I would expect some kind of bills hopefully you will be lucky and they will only be minor things.

BTW, which car have you bought ?

good point on the bike front,

I rode a 125 bike (rgv) for a year when i was 17, when I bought my first car the bike insurance company would accept my one years NCB from my bike to my car policy, that was adrian flux -> allen & allen, not sure if that still works it was 16 years ago !

I paid
£26 provisional (I think)
£112.50 for 15 lessons(£7.50 per lesson)
£30( ish) for test.
£500 for first car
£250 for insurance

How much are lessons now days then? (by hour, not sure if OP is quoting hourly or two hourly lessons)

I used to pay £19.50 an hour I think, which was about 8 years ago.

Pretty sure you can't ride a moped with a car license now.

I paid £10ph 6 years ago, most places were £20ph but I went with some dodgy instructor rather than one of the expensive ones. He was interested in getting people passed and not in making money from them.

Huh, what? I don't think I had to pay anything.

Indeed, that 'upgrade' is what is called the practical test so it's not really a paid for upgrade. :p

I paid:
45€ Theory ( book + 1 test)
1250€ for 25 lessons+ 1 official ''practice'' test ( and no you can't take your test when you please here, you have to do a test through your driving school when they tell you you're ready, and no such thing as a provisional license or taking lessons from relatives, you have to go to schools who charge often 40-50 ish per hour.).
260€ for test.
35€ License card/document.
1800€ First car.
450€ per year insurance.
588€ tax per year.

Okay so your insurance is a rip-off, but overall, those costs are still less than I paid.

Then of course there's 120€ worth of fuel every month, servicing parts ( tyres, brakes, etc) about 40€ per month ( tyres are the worst offenders, if it wasn't for them it'd about 1-2 tenners per month on stuff like bulbs, pads, etc) if you spread it over the year, non essential buys ( detailing products, cleaning, accessories, etc) about 50€ per month for me.

All in all I spend at least a third of my wage on the car, far more at the moment since half my wage is going into a savings account for a nicer car...

How are the costs in the Netherlands at all comparable to the UK ones, it's a different country with different rules money etc. etc.

Can you please stop trying to make them look the same, it's boring.
