"The rise of rape talk"

The word gay used to mean happy.

Homosexuals hijacked the word for use.

Its being hijacked again to mean silly/stupid etc.

****** can't complain.

...but, but, but THERE'S NO ROOM FOR CONTEXT WHEN YOU LOVE TO BE OFFENDED!!!!

What I find most offensive is these jumped-up ****ing hacks getting offended on everyone else's behalf.

These two posts sum everything up and everything else can be ignored(except the jokes).

Essentially, nothing is offensive until you CHOOSE to be offended by something.

Some things will be offensive to almost everyone, somethings will only be offensive to those who like the drama and are, well, pratts.

Simple fact is the context is really the only key thing, someone using a word to be offensive, could explain to you that every time he uses the word "potato" in his mind he's calling you a ******* ****. From then on every time that guy says potato to you, you know he is trying to offend you, does that make the word potato offensive, no, does it even mean you HAVE to be offended when he says it, nope.

Rape is something that happens to people, and its bad, most people get that, using the word rape to describe other situations doesn't cause someone on the other side of the planet to get raped, its not a terrible thing.

Evolution of language (or de-evolution, depending on your point of view) is a constant and ongoing process. As already stated, the move of the f-word from a highly taboo word to an acceptable word in conversation is nothing new. People should not be surprised when offensive terms become commonplace. Another example is the amount the n-word is used online and be young people. If enough people think it is socially acceptable, then it is.

Wasn't it a word foisted on them rather than one they hijacked?

You know why it is being used to mean silly/stupid don't you? Because of the negativity around homosexuality. I can see why someone who is gay could find it offensive as you are basically saying "What you have done is silly and stupid, just like being gay is."

Regardless, use whatever words you like, I am certainly not going to be offended. However I will certainly think much less of someone that would use the word rape in a trivial context especially in a public area. Much the same for the word gay and to be honest, swearing in general. I thought it was just good manners to moderate your language if you do not know your audience.

maybe when it started but tbh when I grew up i knew "gay" as meaning crap/broken/annoying/generally bad before knowing it actually meant homosexuality.

Indeed but if someone does know the origins then don't be suprised if they find it offensive.

Maybe not that old but the word is mainly used in one context now so its old use should die.

Anyone offended by a word is probably quite a boring person who I have no interest in knowing so not much of a loss :)

I crack off rape jokes now and then, but no more than homosexual jokes, race jokes, religous jokes, poor jokes, rich jokes, Scottish Jokes, American Jokes, French Jokes, German jokes, Welsh jokes, disability etc.

It is only a joke.

The world needs to stop worrying about being PC and get on with life.
