Exxxpppennssive ...!!

Think the going rate is £25 a lesson, least that's what it was for my brother a year ago, it's an expensive learning process, but definitely worth it!

Owning a car is expensive but the freedom it gives you makes it all worth it.

In a selfish way I'm glad motoring is expensive, if it was any cheaper everyone would own a car and then no-one would be able to drive due to the increased congestion.

Most companies will let you pay monthly for your insurance, will cost more in total but makes it easier if you cant afford the lump sum, I remember back when I was 16 and I first passed my test my insurance was 6 times the value of my car ^^

surely you mean 17?

think my first insurance was £800, a mighty rs turbo engined orion (b471 ohc IIRC), what a shed

I'm still betting the OP is irish or has a rather silly first car :)

There is no cost in 'uprading' your license, that is part of the test fee :)

I was paying £17 per hour for lessons.
£39 for provisional
£26 for theory (i think)
£49 for test
£2200 for first car
£2000 for insurance

Insurance dropped to £800 the next year though :D

I paid:

Provisional - £50
10 Lessons - £180
Theory Test - £30
Practical Test - £60
First car - £6200
Insurance Fully Comp - £700

That insurance is on my Audi ur quattro Coupe Turbo, so to mirror what others have said, your insurance company is either royally bending you over or you have bought something silly as your first car.

or he lives in ireland

How are the costs in the Netherlands at all comparable to the UK ones, it's a different country with different rules money etc. etc.

Can you please stop trying to make them look the same, it's boring.

he does this all the time. Sometimes i think he forgets he lives in a completely different country to us.

Nah it was 16, im disabled (no not mentally :P) so was allowed to take the test at 16 as the car counted as a mobility aid, waited until I turned 17 to buy a cra though as the quotes I had at 16 were insane lol

or lives in Manchester, some lad on another board i go on isnt getting quotes under 2k on anything and has tried all the insurers on 1.0 micras up to mondeos etc :o

Wow, i thought mine was bad, passed my test at 26 and insurance was 1100 on a 1.1 Fiesta. so glad i held off past 21!

I am guessing a bit as it was some time ago bit I paid

£10 provisional
£68 for 8 lessons
£20 for test
£0 for first car
£0 for insurance

company car on day I passed :p

If possible add your parents as named drivers. Don't use comparison for prices, go directly to phone or get a quote on the actual insurance company's website. Try Bell, Admiral, etc.

I paid £1,700, but worried it's not going to drop much next year.

£700 on that?! How the hell!? Going off your Provisional and Practical costs you're a recent passer too!

People earn roughly the same, of course it's comparable...

Basically, aside from insurance costs, imo you have nothing to moan about, it's far worse here.

Who the **** cares what country it's in, my point is:
In the UK you're being ripped off by insurers, they simply make more profit on people than here, while here we're ripped off generally by tax, which drives up car prices, and general costs of owning a car, and worse rules like no such thing as a provisional license... So don't moan about anything like car prices, tax or lessons and exams... While I shouldn't moan about my insurance because, well, it's decent, compared to UK standard anyhow.

Comparing bring up the differences, what's bad and what good, and what could be different... Comparison is nearly always good. Comparing shows me the UK insurance companies are a bunch of greedy ****'s making loads of profit ( the UK roads are safer than here so saying they have to pay up more for accidents is BS), but it also shows me the past Dutch left wing governments are ripping off motorists and trying to discourage driving going by the rules for taking lessons and the taxes...
