AMD Motherboard Advice

If I can get 3.6GHz or 3.8GHz out of it then I think I will be happy
That won't be a problem with the Gigabyte . . .

AMD® Phenom™ II x6 1055T
  • 14x200=2800MHz
  • 14x258=3612MHz
  • 14x265=3710MHz
  • 14x272=3808MHz
Although the ASRock is worth a look also:

ASRock 890GX Extreme3

£99.99 inc (8+2 PWM)

Take a look at asus :)
I had looked at Asus M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 but having read up on it, it uses a switcher card for the PCIEx16 slots, so I'd have to have my 4870x2 in the 2nd slot, which would mean no room for sound card, plus it would completely block off the SATA ports.

That's a nice board lmfy2k! :)

I have it's little brother . . . similar to yours (£57) but uATX and AM2+/DDR2 running an AM3 AMD® Athlon™ II X4 . . . AMD® 785G chipset is great!

I like the heatsink and 8+2 PWM system on yours (mine is 4+1) . . . you should get some nice overclocks on that!

ASUS M4A785D-M PRO (AM2+/DDR2)

Good board if you have a stash of DDR2 memory . . . .

Same board as me wayne :D great overclocker this thing!! got my 955 BE C2 at 3.7ghz at 1.41v did have it at 3.8 but the hot weather made me tone down a little. Idles at 30c and underload load with GTA 4 41c.

WELL HAPPY

Just to hop in as I have a similar query.
Building a system for a mate, and dont want to use the same board I have due to vdroop, and we may as well have usb3 and sata3, so I was looking at the giga 890 ud3h ... what I dont like is the idea of ob graphics, and although I would have thought the igp wont generate heat if disabled, a review I read says it does  and we hope to get 4ghz out of a 965 be, so now I am going round in circles trying to decide !
seem all the non igp 890 boards are more expensive

The gigabyte GA-890XA-UD3 looks to tick most boxes, but I cant find any reviews ... nor what the pwm system is.

Hi Vogon,

I'm not sure if you have read this page on using the ASUS LLC feature to adjust the vDroop . . . once I read that and set LLC to 19% everything was fine! :)

I don't understand your reasons for not wanting IGP technology included with the board? . . . if you don't use an IGP you can just forget its there, it won't cause any extra heat, affect your overclock in anyway if your not using it? . . . its handy to have it in case your GPU goes faulty or you wanna sell your GPU and didn't decided what you wanna replace it with . . and lastly when you come to sell the board years down the line having an IGP only makes it more versatile to the buyer who may want a board for a HTPC etc and basically increases it resale value . . . there really is no catch, it's win/win! ;)

Regarding the best "Bang-for-Buck" Crossfire/Overclocking board I think now the ASRock 890GX Extreme3 just edges it over the slightly more expensive Gigabyte . . . only thing is the ASRock sold like hotcakes so you may have trouble getting your hands on one!

My board doesnt have LLC :(
IGP ... you would think it doesnt generate heat if disabled, but one review I looked at seemed to infer it was the cause of heat near the cpu socket ??

Either way I'm thinking that the giga 890GPA may be the best option anyhow :)
Xfire isnt an issue tbh.

Hey Vogon :)

My [M4A79XTD EVO] board doesnt have LLC
I just checked the ASUS website and it seems your right? ;)

you would think it doesnt generate heat if disabled
Well if its disabled and not doing anything you would think it wouldn't generate any heat! :p

one review I looked at seemed to infer it was the cause of heat near the cpu socket ??
the IGP is part of the NB which is always working so I'm not sure how anyone could tell? . . . PWMs are near also . . .

Either way I'm thinking that the giga 890GPA may be the best option anyhow :)
Looks like a great board, it's price seems to be creeping up though? . . . £105.99 (4+1) vs £99.99 (8+2) on the ASRock . . .

Xfire isnt an issue tbh.
Well the cheapest SATA 6Gb/s & USB 3.0 board on OcUK is £82.99 (4+1) . . . not a lot in it really compared to the 890GX boards . . .

If you don't need huge overclock and no Crossfire/SATA 6Gb/s & USB 3.0 then why not slash £57 of the build cost and go for maximum "Bang-for-buck" :p

Asus M4A78LT-M

£48.99 inc

we hope to get a decent overclock on his 965BE, and my mate isn't too worried about cost within reason, he will think he got off light with a £105 mobo, TBH so do I :)
And we do want sata 6gb and usb3 ;)

Deffo settled on the Giga 890 now :p

Poor fella, I already have unloaded his wallet for all the WC gear and case, but its gonna be a sweet system :D
