I can't believe you guys! She's a talented artist, dammit, and you should feel ashamed for reducing your discussion of her to the basest of topics!
Who can forget such glorious aural feasts as "I have loved you" and "In this skin"? Not only are they genre-challenging epics, I believe they shifted the world of popular music into areas we had no right to hope for. Bolder, more seductive but increasingly challenging and deep, her music is immediately appealing whilst standing the repetitive test of time.
Now a favourite of young and old alike, early Simpson material was aimed primarily at the younger generation of fans who could instantly relate to classics-to-be "Final Heartbreak" and "Sweet Kisses" ("Sweet Kisses" album, 1999). Whilst light and frothy on first listening, further plays reveal a deeper and more emotionally vibrant pushback which the listener simply must respond to.
Later material from "Irresistible" (2001) and "In this skin" (2003) showed a more mature, reflective Simpson who simultaneously could show her sharp humour to cut through on the more sorrowful tracks ("Loving you" from "In this skin" album, 2003.) Heart-warming and life-affirming pieces sit buddy to buddy with the poppier classics and reward the listener on different levels.
Is it to go too far to suggest that Ms Simpson defined the late 90's and early naughties? That she changed it, improved it, moulded it and formed it? I would say no. We as listeners, nay humans, must empathise and embrace the beautiful and touching music of Jessica Simpson, the people's Princess of America.
Also, I would hit her like the fist of an angry God when she was normal sized. As a fatty? Yeah, not so much.
