Since OCUK has now allowed talk on jailbreaking apple hardware to allow non licensed software to be used are we allowed to talk about this in the console forum?

I think iPhone jailbreaking discussion is now allowed because as of July it was ruled in a US court that jailbreaking was legal.

However, modification of PS3s and Xboxs isn't legal, and it's also a practice that Sony and Microsoft will ban people for.

hmm so if i install linux on my ps3 i will end up with a court summons for illegal modification and use of a purchased games console, then i be getting butt raped for 10-15 years..... , hmm im gonna stick to pc's.

Whats the big deal.

Sony would only kick up a fuss if you had the actual code on here. Companies are getting away selling the hardware without the code on now.

No code no worries.

christ cant you read? this is the second thread in less then 24hours that weve had talk of basically illegal activities:

Lets make this very clear now. There is to be no talk about chipping consoles (whether to use pirated games or not) or ROMs or any piracy related talk.

Kreeeee has made it plainly obvious to people about these rules but they're being ignored. Therefore, I won't be warning people anymore, it'll be straight to a suspension.

If you have any questions about what is and is not allowed, email Kreeeee or any Don.

bunch of pirates are why we get stuck with constant rehashes and sequels

Arguably it's the people actually buying these rehashes and sequels that result in us getting them year after year, their safe money. :p

Personally I don't see the difference between this and the Apple jailbreaking. They both enable piracy, and equally both allow you to run your own legal code to modify hardware the hardware that own. Your not going to get pulled up in a court for sticking a dongle in your PS3 and running your own code.

theres a big difference, the main one being that the jailbreak ruling was passed because the judge deemed that the average iphone jailbreak code only affected 1/160,000 of the original code and as such wasnt deemed to be appropriately breaking DMCA main criteria of dissemination of technology/software.
It is important to note that the ruling merely states that the DMCA will not persue claims of jailbreak against such a device BUT apple can still shut down your services for breach of contract.

the ps3 jailbreak (if it is to be believed) is on a completely different level of code tampering and actively goes against any DRM protocols Sony put in place from day 1.
