whats the secret of this game, ive tried and tried to be good at it. after 6 years of owning the game im still as poor as ever.

Get to know the maps through repetition, find the common hidey-holes that people use, the high places where snipers like to go, etc.
Use your ears as well as your eyes, with knowledge of the map and the sound of their footsteps, it isn't hard to tell exactly where a player is, and where he'll most likely go.
When in a firefight, don't stand still or you'll be an easy target.
When in a firefight, don't just stop to reload, press Q, bring out your pistol and keep firing. If you see him reload, and you're close enough, bring out your knife and charge at him. If anything else you can make it brown trousers time for him.
Don't get mad when you die, it's just a game, and frustration will make you play worse most of the time.
Use flashbangs when you're almost certain there's someone hiding around the corner.
