Golf V5 beyond the fail thread

Not seeing a whole lot of Golf V5 non-love from people in bangers myself, personally? Mind you, even if there was, are they not entitled to an opinion because they cannot afford a better car?

I'm sure you have read the whole thread and will notice I clarified that. So stop trolling :)

...If you feel that the exhaust note overrides all the many shortcomings of the car then fine, go and buy one...

And then be utterly depressed the day that someone with a proper VR6 pulls up next to you and gives it the beans making your V5 sound a bit plain :D.

As was mentioned (and pretty much ignored) in the fail thread, it's a point less car. If you must do the V5 in a MK4 Golf generation car you'd have to be absoultely flipping bonkers not to go for a Toledo.

Then again, a Golf V5 is arguably a better car than my old Soarer, so perhaps my opinion doesn't matter?

Does the vr6 really sound that different that it would make the golf seem plain?

I'll ignore the rest of your post because hey, your broadband - legendary fail member :)

I've heard a V5 through a powerflow special and (In my personal opinion) it could not hold a candle to a VR6, even through a standard system.

Don't get me wrong, the V5 doesn't exactly sound bad but the mind boggling awesomeness of a VR6 on full chat is just in another league.

See that's why I've always liked the vr6. Been tempted a few times but worried they are too old now :(

I've got a 170 in a Toledo. I like it. Just a shame it has such **** poor fuel economy, if I was doing serious mileage I'd buy something cheaper to run.
Don't buy one in a Golf (or even a Bora), they're overpriced.
Don't buy one expecting a quick car. Even new diesels will have you at the lights.
What you will get is loads of kit for the money, a very smooth drive and a lovely burbly 5-pot when you cane it.

I know some people supercharged vr6's. Surely there is similar for the v5?

There is. Rotrex supercharged a VR5 Beetle, 300bhp or something I think.
They're quite rare engines though, and most seem to be of the opinion that if you were gonna spend the money tuning one you might as well just buy a VR6.

Irrelevent, to iaind louder than oem seems to = chav, he's posted similar before.

Well mot quite, but mostly yes, the beauty of opinions and personal taste eh? If you look back at a thread I created when I had the Saab, I was interested in making it a bit louder. But yes, my opinion on what is chavvy is probably stricter than most, not sure why that's an issue? I like cars mostly standard an subtle.

But the first one especially sounded raspy, droning and unpleasant, don't really care how much it cost or what badge is stuck to it. There's a Civic Type-r around here that looks otherwise completely standard and the exhaust looks pretty subtle too. But the noise it makes is obscene, I've been behind it in traffic a few times and had to turn up the volume of my music because of the drone even with the windows closed. And when he drives past when I'm walking to work, I most definitely think 'chav'

Back on topic though, seems like pretty low aspirations to me. You've had the v6 and the 1.8t, but you're lusting after a mid range engine on the same platform car?

well pretty much, yeah. whats the point of getting ths lightly smaller, less powerful engine which consumes the same amount of fuel?

I don't think they did actually, at least I've never seen one. It wasn't really a serious suggestion BTW, more a reference point to the performance/economy ratio.

I know it wasn't, just had me' interested for a second :) Though I've had a fiat auto before, box was shocking lol

Owners seem to suggest it has different charachteristics that are more likeable.

I love the 5 pot sound.

Mine with my chavvy exhaust :D

That said, what is the price difference between a V5 and a 4-motion?

but what would make it more likeable considering its slower and drinks more

Performance and economy are not the only attributes to a car. As for what owerns prefer them for, ask the owners as only they seem to know about it.

I'd usually agree with such a statement, if it was a mildly interesting car with some sort of redeemable feature. On the face of it, the V5 golf doesn't have such a thing, and believe me I can see the "redeemable features" in most cars...

The engine is slow and uneconomical (yet makes a slightly interesting exhaust note) and it was shoe horned into the MK4 Golf, which while wasn't exactly Volkswagen's high point still manages to command an almost unexplainable premium on the second hand market making them far from bargains. Where exactly are we supposed to fall in love with this car? What attributes does the V5 golf have that actually makes it worth even considering?
