does anyone here think graphics just arnt that good and are over rated ?

lol anybody who says 'there wont be realistic graphics' talks out there buttocks, we have realistic visuals in movies and we will see that stuff in games eventually, not anytime yet as the hardware needs to get massively more powerful for realtime.

The whole 'it will take too long' will not stop developers from eventually (once hardware capable) reaching realistic visuals. They will think of new ways to create things with less input, become more efficient or w/e the point is it will happen regardless.

I would say that metro 2033 has got to be one of the most poorly optimised games in a long while, (unless you play on a quad-sli gtx480 setup) but even on an HD5870, i would get fps drops as low as 20. Now the graphics and effects were beautiful, and i have to admit i was on the edge of my seat at some parts, but honestly games like BC2 look much better and run so much faster.
As for the overall advancement in graphics, since around the release of the xbox 360, the core engines of the games havent advanced very far at all (with the exception of the Cryengine) but with games like bioshock 2, re-using a VERY dated enine from as far back as 2003, its clear to see where the limitations lie...

Depends what you're expecting OP, i don't get my hopes up anymore over games and i've never followed the hype, that might be where you're going wrong, expecting too much from the hype.

a lot of people get over excited when they see a bit of eye candy.

Oblivion + mods still is increadble, espically the seamless rolling of sceneary.

Personally i think GFX in general has plateau'd somewhat since HL2, or at the very least there hasn't been a massive leap in a log while

Back when PC games were still dominate, you had huge GFX leaps every couple of years. Since the Source engine came out is been a much more steady, slowed down, improvement.

I for one think things are still pretty rapidly improving - but then as a more casual gamer (I only get a new game maybe 3-4 times a year) I see it in a more spread way.
I think that as people now are spending a lot more money and time on games they're finding that they're keeping up with things so much that they want to actually surpass the current tech...

To be honest, I'm quite easily impressed - I like to keep things in perspective in that, for example, I personally couldn't create a program for the likes of Pong let alone Metro or such!

Dragon Age as well, Mass Effect 1.

Oblivion looks a thousand times better than Dragon Age.

i still havnt gotten into mass effect 2, so I dont know.

Looking at mass effect 2 screenshots, yes (modified) Oblivion looks a lot better.

Each to their own i guess - i find the hand painted / drawn backgrounds in point & click games absolutely beautiful to look at, and they haven't overly changed in the last 10 years. And they don't take a beast of a rig to run well.

..why are we all replying to this numpty ... he pirates games .. if he thinks that graphics hasn't advanced very much over the years then it's down to that dumbass and his fellow pirates ..... btw .. your system is crap .... :D

Next gen of consoles will see in the next step of graphics. Its where most of the money is so devs see no point in creating something that wont run on one - commercial suicide for bragging rights doesnt go down too well.

All we as pc gamers will see until this happens is tricks and fads designed to keep us happy (tesselation, physx etc) - superficial stuff thats been tacked on to make things seem better. Not complaining totally as there are some beautiful looking games around (and gameplay > graphics right?) but there wont be any major strives for better graphics whilst non-upgradable platforms rule until the next 1 comes out, then we will see a few big jumps then some streamlining then a long period of 'meh'ness. Its quite a predictable cycle by now and i cant see it changing anytime soon.
