Spec me... an American rental car

The whole job thing confuses me. Despite being educated and fluent in English I am unable to work in the USA yet I don't think I met a single member of housekeeping staff or people in places like Subway who were fluent English speakers, yet they all had jobs in the USA

Minimum wage is practically unliveable on over there, working conditions are horrible. If you are a white English speaking person you can get a job doing something, anything, that isn't fast food or cleaning. They have to hire people who are at the very bottom of the social ladder to do the worst jobs.

I was more on about the visa aspect.

Why would you not be able to get a visa?

Put it like this. Crossing the Atlantic in the hold of a Spanish boat, lying under a rag the entire time to avoid detection, getting soaked in marine diesel and sewage whilst you sail through a hurricane only to arrive at the US coast a shadow of your former self, gangrinous from head to toe with a bout of cholera and the consumption. That is less painful and less of a pain in the ass than gaining the right to work legally in the US.

The only way in for most people is by setting up a million dollar turnover business employing 10 US citizens, getting sponsored by an employer for being exceptional in your field or by marriage. There's also the green card lottery but it's well.... a lottery. Needless to say I'll not be setting up any million dollar businesses or be receiving sponsorship from the FAA. :(

Fox, the depression of arriving back in the UK doesn't get any easier. Picture having to deal with that every month :p

We don't qualify for the green card lottery either Scuzi! Doh.

I do but it's quite frankly a waste of money. The vast majority of the visas seem to go to African nations.

Haha. I'm resigned to standing outside Home Depot or Lowes with the Mexicans with a "Speaks English" banner around my neck :D

Just over a week until we're off and looking forward to the break.

So you'd recommend the Mustang (drop top)? I see Hertz also do the Camaro for about the same price too.

I reckon the Camara is probably better than the Mustang but the fact the roof comes off is great.

I wasn't going to do a writeup 'LOOK I WENT ON HOLIDAY' threads are a bit lame. Unless people would genuinelly find it interesting?

Yea do the write up. Do it with the car review in motors though so i dont miss it.

Yeah give us a write up. I'm sure there are many others like me interested in a USA road trip at some point in the future. I've no idea where I'd like to go I just know I want to do it in a convertible mustang.

Fox, you could always settle for Canada. It's much nicer here anyway and easier to get in. :p

Indeed, this is what I am doing, or intend to do. I'm going for a total career change, from IT ...which I am really sick of now tbh, to retraining to be an electrician ...I haven't worked out quite how I am going to do this just yet but I want to. Considering I went to university and did a purely academic degree (nothing to do with IT), it's not exactly a route I thought I would go down ...not many people need an historian or a political theorist though tbh :p

Roll on Canada I say :)

I can't claim to have been everywhere in the US or Canada, not even close ...but I do prefer Canada, I just like the 'feel' of it more, the atmosphere, the people ...I don't quite know, it just feels right I suppose. At least Alberta does, BC is nice too. Also I have some family there.
