My mate is currently leading a poker tourney with £600,000 prize pool

So using your 4's and 2's method;

Let's say I'm playing heads up, I hold Q 10 of clubs. Opponent is holding 5 and 6 of hearts.

Flop is Jc 9c Ah

I've got three K's for the straight, three 8's for the lower straight, and 10 other clubs, plus a Q or a 10 to pair

22 outs, 88% chance?

Turn is a 7 of hearts.

I'm then left with two kings, 10 clubs, and two 8's. So it's now 56%

Opponent has 9 hearts left, plus a 5 or 6 of spades/diamonds - so 52% of him hitting his flush or pair.

ALL IN?!

Assuming that if you hit your hand, you win.
You have 4 kings or 4 8s for a straight. And 9 clubs to the flush.
That gives you 13 outs to hit your draw. 13*4= 52.

Now if you are going on the fact that you think any Q or 10 will give you the best hand, remember you don't know what your opponent has. If you are assuming any Q or 10 DOES give you the best hand, this gives you another 24% of hitting the winning hand on the turn.

Well I didn't include the K of clubs or 8 of clubs when I thought about the straights, but I spose it's all the same - those would be the nuts though, straight flush. And yeah I wouldn't be bothered including the Q or 10 as outs. Anyone calling to the turn, you'd assume wouldn't be drawing the heart flush.

9 clubs 3 kings and 3 8's - 15 outs.

Why would they need any outs, they have the best hand :p

I'm on about the outs for the river, you don't have anything at the turn.

Yeah, but if you're all in on the turn and the other player looks you up, you don't need any outs is my point. They have to hit, not you! Any 5, 6 or heart wins for them. Any other wins for you.

I also don't get why he's 52% at this point? He has 13 outs from 44 cards, that's 29.5% no?

Sorry, just read what you're on about. Yeah, that method doesn't work whatsoever :p

The all in bit was a joke. And yeah if I was all in I'd be happy up against his 56h.

Ahh I made it 13 outs, and * by 4 instead of two.

When it's actually 14 outs and * 2.

He's got 10 hearts left and 5s/5d 6s/6d so 28%

That seems more like it. I made a few mistakes!

Had no idea of the maths involved!

I play with some friends usually a £2/3 buy in for 2500 'units'. Blinds start at 25/50 and then double each cycle of the table returns to the dealer.

Goes quite quick and is good fun and only £2/3 at the end of the day so there are no hard feelings.

I generally tend to go buy gut instinct and what seems to be coming out a lot! that and also if I feel lucky ;)

Which method, my method?

Ignore my posts, I've messed up the math.

Lets do something simple.

I've got AK off.

Flop is 6 9 4 rainbow.

I've got 3 aces and 3 kings to make my hand.

6 outs, * 4 = 24% on the turn.

turn is a 10.

I've now got 12% on the river.

Correct?

9 hearts, there's already 4 out there :p

Near enough, yeah. It does depend what you're up against though. If your opponent calls with AJ and that flop comes up, a continuation bet to a pre-flop raise may take it down.

You only need to calculate outs if you feel you are behind in the hand. AK is a winning hand if your opponent has 23 off. It'll be them who needs outs to better their hand and win.

This is what I've also been trying to say, the term "out" is a card you NEED to hit to have a chance of winning the hand. AK vs AJ pre-flop - AJ technically only has 3 "outs" but if the flop brings KQ4 then AJ has 7 outs, an extra 4 10's.

AK pre-flop doesn't have "outs" as it does not need to hit anything to win the hand. If the board runs dry, for example, 6-5-8-10-8, AK holds without catching any pairs.

Flying out Tuesday 28th, think we've got Thursday eve free at the moment.

Yeah I mean the shambolic state of affairs at the once great LFC.

Couldn't believe it when I heard the radio today.

Back OT, is there any good PC games to get that would aid with learning poker?
