Best way to try and get a room upgrade at a hotel in Dubai??

I am off to Dubai with the wife tonight and we are hoping for a room upgrade in our hotel.

I was just wondering what success people had with this?

Should I just ask while we are checking in or perhaps e-mail the hotel and tell them its a special occasion?

btw, the hotel is the Atlantis on the Palm and I've read that the "Imperial Club" rooms are great and you get some freebies thrown in! :p

Just call them, you will pay for it either way so the sooner you ask the more chance you have of them accommodating you.
 
I always email my holiday hotels and tell them it's a special occasion. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I have no idea if it being a 'special occasion' means anything to them, or if they do it if they can and they don't if they can't.

You could also try saying you have been recommended their hotel by a friend, or that it's a repeat visit and were hoping to have your loyalty rewarded with an upgrade.

Depends how we define best, if we want to be guaranteed a yes (as long as they have spare rooms) then paying is the only way.

Saying it is a special occasion, may or may not work in which case it isn't that great either is it?
