I have recently signed up to VM for the first time (i'm moving to Bristol). But I was suprised when I was told that my choices meant that an Engineer had to come around to do the installation.

The two points were:

50mb Broadband
V+ HD Box (does the whole pause live TV thing).

Now why on earth should these two things require an engineer to install them? They said that if i had chosen 20mb BB and a normal TV Box then i could do the installation myself.

Surely all the V+ Box is, is a normal box with a bit of RAM in it to record the live TV, and doesnt require any kind of additional installation surely?

And there's already a Cable line coming to the house, set up by a previous tenant so why s an engineer needed for the broadband too?

I'm only asking becuase a: they charge £50 for the 'installation' of the V+ box and b: Instead of getting online inside 48 hours, i'm going to have to wait 2 weeks!

NO idea, BT do the same thing when theres allready a line going to your home. they say "you need a new line" lmao... its all about the £££££££££££££££££££££

They need to split the feed and use a magic box or something.

I had three people come round to install TV once. One did the work two stood around watching!

I'm guessing here, but the equivalent Sky product (Sky+) has two tuners, which means that two connections are required (from the satellite dish, in the case of Sky).

Perhaps this necessitates some extra cabling in the case of Virgin?

When he installs the box he has to go on his little pda box thingy and link it up and get it registered,he usually has to make a phonecall aswell.

I think you need another line put in so that you can record one channel and watch another at the same time.

Edit - beaten :p

I just got the 20mb broadband and phone deal and i had to have an engineer around. Its mainly so people don't complain about things not working when they just have things in the wrong sockets.

Oh and this was with the previous tenants still having their virgin contract active :s

Meh I only had to wait a week, 2 would be tortuous

Edit: I phoned up to get mine, and mentioned the £15 self installation they advertise online. So They gave be money of the first bill so it was the equivilant of only £15 installation

Well when we had our V+ Box the engineer had to set it up, find a barcode and use his little computer thing, and then call someone because it didnt work. Also with the 50mb broadband you need a new modem.

The blokes who do the TV installs haven't been trained for the 50mb install yet, even though there is nothing to it. When they do get the training it will be one bloke to install all the services.
