TT RS driver pulls handbrake when brakes fail

Poor fella. I had a similar but less drastic thing happen to me on the nurburgring in a mk5 Golf GTI. Coming into a hairpin (I haven't learnt all the names because it's pointless) I hammered on the brakes and basically nothing happened, pumped the crap out of the pedal and uttered a few expletives. I turned in as late as I could for the hairpin and just made it around. It's all on video and to be honest, looks like I absolutely nailed the corner. I however nearly crapped my pants...

I think he definitely did the right thing. No way in hell would he have been able to scrub off that much speed just using the gears. I just hope that never happens to me when I'm racing....

You can't say that without uploading it onto youtube!!! :)

probably getting a shed load of hate mail.

I posted a video of one of our members crashing on here at the MM and he was getting all sorts of horrendous vicious hate mail.

Stopped as soon as i pulled the video.

LOL! I need to see that video.

OT - the TTRS sounds absolutely amazing, 5 pot Audi's are still one my favourite engine notes.

lol at the OP calling him a noob

most of us would've scream for mummy and gone through the pearly gates gripping onto the steering wheel

If in doubt, always ditch it sideways. It's a common racing technique to remove as much speed as quickly as possible and to distrubute crash force over a much larger area.

I like to think I would have changed down gears and dabbed the hand break and slowed down gradually but bet when you are going at over 100mph and you press the brakes and they don't work it is hard to think straight. Real  moment indeed.

Just not going to work at those speeds.

If you need to scrub speed fast to avoid a bigger accident a spin is the best option. You won't believe how a spin quickly scrubs off speed.

I've been there and had to do exactly same thing, only thing is it was on the road and putting car into a spin prevented a bigger accident that would have involved other cars. The result was just minor cosmetic damage and a car that was still drivable. :)

It's on someone elses camera who I was there with and I haven't spoken to him in months. Might email him now and see if I can get it! Tbh it really looks uneventful on the video, but I think you can hear my screaming....

Even with both luck and talent on your side I still think you'd have hit the tirewall at a good 50mph as your not gonna be shedding much speed until your already onto the corner, the gravel pit didn't seem to drop his speed much at all. I'm pretty sure the impact velocity would have been closer to 90mph unless the driver was able to use the handbrake very effectively.

I guess potentially a talented, level headed driver might have managed to use that method to get speed down enough to pull left or right of the wall but doubt that would actually happen without practise :S

Feel bad for the driver, but that could have been a whole lot worse.

You don't really plan to loose brakes like that - he probably panicked, can't blame him to be fair.

Should have just wall ridden the barrier at 100mph Gran Turismo style and come out of it with no damage and infront of the other cars at the other end of the corner!
