Pretty sure ARGOS isn't frowned upon on OCUK but just had a phone call after taking our daughters £69 Sony camera back after she had dropped it and made the LED screen a bit useless.
Is that Mr Poole?
Yes
It's about your camera, Sony say it's not their fault but there will be a charge if you want it fixing
How much
£65
But it only cost £69
We can send it back to you for £25
I don't think so, bye

I don't blame ARGOS for this but surely Sony must have a brain in their heads to ever think that somebody would pay it - or would some people?

So what are your tales of totally ridiculous Customer Service?

Quite a long while back I ordered two items from Argos. One of the items, an exercise bike, didn't come with all the parts needed for assembly - three times! The second item, a juicer, was faulty as well. Having said all of that, when I needed to contact customer services (four times, once for each mistake), there was never any issue and the service then given to rectify a problem was good. Shame it just took them several attempts. :p

I'm pretty sure that if he applies pressure he will get something good come out of it, maybe not up to Logitech's service but reasonably close maybe. :) :D

It's definitely worth phoning Sony up and shouting at them. If you're not a shouty person, apply a shouty friend to the cause. You'll be amazed what a little righteous abuse can get you these days.

My Dad has a habit of writing our Surname and post code all over stuff he keeps in the shed - lawn mower, strimmer, power washer etc etc. This was due to being burgled several years back.

He bought a power washer from Argos, and proceeded to brand it. A few weeks later it clapped out. I went with him when he took it back to Argos. The girl on the desk took it out the box and the look on her face was best described as: o_O

She didn't say a word though and gave my Dad a replacement! :D

The other day I took my Toshiba laptop back to John Lewis as the fan had stopped working. Since it was still under warranty why not? The bloke on the desk, thinking he was some sort of expert, was asking if he could look at the event viewer for the crashes [due to over heating]. I told him no. The laptop was overheating, because the fan wasn't working.

The numpty still tried to argue the toss. I don't get it. It is under warranty so it is my right to take it back when it breaks. It is no skin of his nose, but noooo. 15 minutes of him trying to find fault with my diagnosis. In the end I just loaded it up, ran Intel Burn Test. 5 seconds later it shuts off and the whole time the fan didn't so much as twitch.

The guy was suitably apologetic and got it sorted.

If it's an item of any value, I always, always phone the store beforehand to check that it's okay for replacement/refund. That way you get an answer and can normally walk in with someone knowing you phoned and it's sorted very quickly.

If they refuse over the phone, I just phone the next store along who are normally willing to take it back. I've done to much arguing/****ing about in shops with returns over the years to be bothered standing around in shops for all that hoo-haa. It makes my blood boil.

The problem is, it's such a cheap camera, any type of repair to it is going to be worth a large part of it's value just from the time it takes someone to look at it and repair it not even including the cost of any parts. Ultimately stuff like this is basically disposable.

I've had problems with Argos as well, they are a terrible company customer service wise to deal with and I avoid them like a plague now. I had to actually threaten to take them to court and spoke with about 3 different managers and god knows how many "customer service advisors". In the end I got my refund and I even kept the broken item but with a lot of hassle, breath wasted and a rise in my blood pressure.

Factory constructing costs are not the same as individual repairs.
In the end, she dropped it and they need to cover parts and time spent, although some things do seem to be more expensive than they need to be. (Sony laptops, like keyboards!!)

Maybe i'm getting this wrong but by the sounds of it she dropped it,were you expecting Argos to give you a new one or pay for the repair themselves or Sony?

How is it poor customer service?

Repairing a camera is quite a skilled process. Manufacturing a camera is a largely automated process.

There is probably not a huge amount less work fixing the LCD on a £69 camera than there is fixing the LCD on a £600 camera.

Absolutely spot on. :)

My brother once threw a faulty Freeview box at the manager of "The Indian Store" because they refused to take it back. He is still banned from that branch...

ofc this would be a different story if she had accidental damage insurance then i would like to see them argue the case of this :< sometimes u never think to take them out but in her case it could have been worth it :< always thought of doing that to a phone or that if i did have the cover :P

This pretty much sums up what i was going to say. It's not parts that push up the price, it's labour, shipping, etc.

Your brother sounds like a moron.

Argos once wanted to sell me an extended warranty at the till.....on a disposable camera.

Price of camera £7.50
Price of extended warranty £9.95

I declined the kind offer :)
