For gaming and a little bit of editing an I7 is overkill to be honest you would be better going for a better graphics card set up, SSD and a decent monitor.

the thing is with the I7950 at such a good price at the moment it is a steal.

Have you thought about going down the I5 route with a quad, you can save yourself some money with the mobo and RAM.

how about something like this?

1000build.jpg

Could knock £100 off that easily by shopping around, swapping the RAM etc giving you some money to put towards a monitor, gaming KB or mouse or some extra fans for the case.

This build would be slower in benchmarks due to no HT but honestly you would not be able to see the difference gaming.

The cooler i just chose to show you what you could get for your money...personally i would go for air (or custom water) but im so out of touch with what highend one is best now days :(

hi stulid,,just wanted to ask is there any "disadvantage" with choosing a h55/57 mobo instead of a p55 one if you coose the i5
or is it just "ideal" to put an i5 in a p55 mobo.

not much worth noting, there are differences, and im sure i remember seeing something about the H55/57 chipset has less bandwidth or something per bus lane, it was mainly the RAM price I nearly chocked on my cuppa at.

i was just showing that a i5 build makes sense for a gaming PC. if the only thing you can pick up on is the ram (which you could save £50 on) then what is the problem?

it annoys me a bit when people spec a I7 as a gaming CPU...as its not, its a CPU better off used when multithreading. And as we all know there are only a few games that use more than 2 cores...

In fact i would say if building a gaming machine a I3 would be good enough at least for a couple of years as lets face it 90% of PC games are console ports and the consoles all use 3-4yr old tech.

The problem is in 99% of the case computer power has outgrown software, why do you think we have to use stress programs to test stability.

Ooh dont let jakesnake see you suggest an i5 over an i7 ;). Some people think an i7 is practically compulsory if it can be shoehorned into the budget. Afterall, 7 is a higher number than 5 innit. I (and the benches) 100% agree with you though. For a pure gaming rig going i5 7xx saves you £100+ for no performance hit, and that can go towards SSD space or GPU horsepower, and that actually will make a decent performance gain.

Well, for example (and now that jakesnake isn't here to derail the OP's thread with ranting :)), taking my i7 spec above, if you went i5 instead you can get yourself a 480 and a decent cooler for overclocking the CPU all for the same price. No prizes for guessing which rig will be fastest in games.

An example of the principle really. Whether or not a 480 is worth 50% more than a 470 is another question altogether. Probably not. As a 470 is still a cracking card, perhaps it's just money in your pocket, nice mouse, etc?

Just make sure you get top end cooling, you going to want to overclock :) also remember the 6000series of cards are released next month so there will be some price adjustment across all ranges, from whats been leaked so far the low midrange card will beat the 5850, so the new 5850/6850 card is going to be a cracker.

is it worth buying anything yet people??

maybe :D
