Hi guys

I've got roughly between 9-11k spend and i cant really make my mind up.
I know these 2 cars are very different in terms of practicality and so on but
i like the looks of the vx220 but the monaro has the v8 burble :(

I'm not in the position to buy just yet but will be come new year heres 2 examples

Any thoughts much appreciated :D

Neither.

Seriously, if you need to ask us whether you should buy a 4 cylinder, stripped out, totally raw hardcore sports car or a large, heavy, ungainly, comfortable V8 powered coupe then you dont really want either, do you?

They are chalk and cheese. Its like asking whether you should buy a Mini Cooper S or a Mercedes E320 diesel. I cannot imagine why a shortlist would ever come down to these two wildly different cars.

Decide what sort of car you actually want, then the decision is made for you.

Do you want a precision sportscar to reward you on a B road? Or do you want a wafty, comfortable Coupe with a nutcase V8 and a lairy back end?

Very much this. Decide what you want out of a car. Also, IIRC the body panels on monaro's are very expensive?

This, but it doesn't mean you can't consider the choices between them. I own a VX220 and have contemplated swapping to a Monaro in a year or 2 if finances allow.

I don't get this argument sometimes. For someone with few requirements and no constraints why can't you have two 'wildly different' cars in your short-list?

e.g. you're main requirements are speed, performance and aesthetics with no other constraints? Right now I'd have difficulty deciding whether I'd choose a Z4M or an RS4.

Indeed, if he's just buying a car for the lulz, you can have allsorts.

+1

People are very hostile in that respect (for no reason), when I said I was torn between an MX5 and a DC2, I had all sorts of angry replies :p

it's because you cant remotely compare the two, mx-5 versus mr2 for example is a similar form factor, engine size, running cost etc..

a monaro and a vx200 apart from the badge are totally different

I personally dont remotely care and will jsut say which I prefer, but I can see why people might take exception

They are so different that its so unlikely that somebody would be equally happy with either. Some people do go through car choices by just picking stuff that looks good or goes X fast, but these are the same people who claim to be 'bored' with a car after a month anyway. In reality they just didnt bother to pick the right car.

If you are the sort of driver who'd really enjoy the way an Elise drives, a Monaro would irritate you with its bulk and handling. Whereas if you love the way the Monaro drives..

That's a bit of a sweeping statement. I like the way my Clio drives and the way my Camaro drives. Both dirve very differently but I don't like only one type of car.

If you want a fast interesting car both of those tick the boxes. You don't always need a rational reason to like a car, and if it's not going to cause you any issues to own one why not go for it?

To answer the question though I'd go for the Monaro. It's nice having back seats to stick some friends in if you feel like it.

But when they are so different how are we supposed to advise him?

It's not like Focus v Astra where the fact the Astra isn't as sharp to drive as the Focus is genuinelly useful, or the fact that perhaps feature A on the Focus isnt as good as feature B on the Astra, or that overall the Focus is a better car - they are totally different. They are incomparable.

The only decision between the two would be an irrational one based on what the heart says - how are we supposed to help with that?

Got to disagree with this, I have complimented many cars over the past few months.

Ranging from MX5s, VX220s, Clio 182s, Focus ST etc etc.

Just because they do different jobs, they all have their own different traits which will make them fun to drive.
