thinking about a set of mo's for the vectra 8x18

someone mentioned in another thread about these wheels being quite hardy.

question is, will they withstand the rigours of day to day potholes and suchlike ? will they take said beating for a sustained period(ala as per the kind of use a taxi would give them?

and are reyland the cheapest place to buy? iirc £850 for a set of 4

Why bother? It's a taxi ffs. Just use the smallest set of steelies that will fit over the discs and shod them in the cheapest ditchfinders you can find.

For the taxi? Really wouldn't bother. You'd be changing tyres at a premium all the time :(

They are hard as nails being a competition wheel but they are quite heavy compared to things like the TD Pro Race 1.2. If, for example, I was buying for a track car, I'd want something lighter, but for a rally car or road car where the motorsport looks appeal then it'd be good.

If you are buying a set get them from Reyland as they somehow manage to be cheaper than buying from Compomotive direct.

this

Strong, heavy, good looking. Great motorsport wheel.

you could ask the question why do mechanics spend 5-10k on snap on roll cabs when a cheapo box would do to store their tools? the taxi may be a tool but that doesnt mean i dont want it looking top notch :)

18;s small drop circa 30mm and a big dollop of extra power wont go amiss

No comparison, and my toolbox won't smell off pee and vomit at the end of the night, no matter how cool the wheels and the 'drop'...

Am I the only person who would feel a little uneasy if the Taxi they ordered turned up wearing aftermarket wheels?

Nope, as a punter if I saw a taxi turn up that had been modded I'd be very uneasy about going in it.

I also wouldn't be pleased if the taxi I got in had a bone shattering ride.

You havent got in many taxies outside london have you ? :D

The taxi drivers for private hire love to modify their cars. Theres a Focus TDCi driving round newcastle that has the full Focus ST bodykit, and even has the ST badge on.

Askmid check shows its a diesel however ! lol.

Thought you couldn't modify taxis?

You can private hire vehicles

Its the hackney carriages that have a very strict set of rules, hence most use the LT1 taxi thing for hackney carriage.

This gets on my nerves a little bit, actually. LTI make some of the worst automobiles in existence:
  • Disgusting ride quality befitting a 50s car - harsh and crashy yet wallows around the tiniest of bends.
  • No power
  • Rubbish fuel economy
  • Incredibly noisy
  • Uncomfortable
  • Build quality LooLOLoLOloLOLL. I have never known a vehicle to rattle as much as an LTI taxi, even when new.
They just seem absolutely rubbish in every single way.

I mean, the current TX4 taxi is a massive improvement over the previous generations, but that has one of it's primary advertised features as "anti-block braking technology". What. Seriously? ABS brakes? They've only been around 30+ years! A nearly 20 year old Mondeo has ABS brakes.

LTI churn out total and utter dross IMO. The taxi survives only because it's iconic and I suspect because the taxi driving base as a whole is incredibly loyal to them. To top it all off? These things are over 30 grand. You can get a half-decent Mercedes-Benz E-Class for the same money, or a Viano.

I'm sure i read on here it was the hackney carriages that have a tougher set of rules than the private hire vehicles

Wonder if thats what drives people to use the LT1s.

I'm sure there is a nice, strict set of rules that provide LTI with a monopoly, as no other normal vehicle will comply and so the taxi has to be bespoke. No vehicle manufacturer can be bothered/is able to afford to capture what is a small market (only ~25,000 vehicles in the parc) away from a single long-term provider with a probably loyal customer base. It'd no doubt be a foreign firm that tried and they'd be vilified as the invading black-cab-killers by the sort of knee-jerk protectionism that has enabled us to enjoy many inferior products through the ages.

wakefield does have some hackney carriage vehicles that arent LT1 stuff, Toyota Avensis, Vauxhall Vectra etc..

They arent modified however, they're all stickered up in black/white looking exactly the same.

The modified ones (we've got a vectra round our way with some nasty bodykit on) are all private hire vehicles so they must have less strict rules.

You pay for snap on etc because the will last you longer.
That's completely different to buying something that will cost you money to keep replacing :p

It's a work tool where you want to male as much money from it as possible, spending ££££'s more a year on tyres is not a good idea :p
Also, how does things like this affect insurance for taxi drivers?

One more thing, ride comfort! Taxis are generally crap at best of times :p

Ok.

Firstly lti are in big trouble ATM as their monopoly is being challenged through the courts as various councils impose regulations that ensure only the lti stuff can be plated

Iirc there's a couple of English councils already lost in court over this will post up sour e when I get home

As for my taxi I spend anything up to 18 hours a day in it hence it has full leather and all the toys already I just want something that looks ambit better hence MOs and I'll be replacing the worn stock suspension with bilstein b6/12 units along with a subtle drop 30mm or so hardly OTT why does anyone modify cars in that case? At least modding the taxi get full use out of it

Insurance wise as long as it's declared it's fine they weren't fussed with remap so I don't see them bothering with updated suspension and eventually some 345mm brakes which are the primary reason for wanting to go to 18" rims

On the occasions I use taxis I really want the biggest, most comfortable and pleasant looking car possible. A lowered Vectra with modded wheels would put me off tbh :\

Compomotive race wheels for a Glaswegian Taxi?

LOL, I thought I had heard it all up until now.

Really, whats next? 6pot 360mm Brake upgrade so you can stop quickly at all the red lights?

Edit:- Just seen your lowering it and you want a dolop of "extra power". This can only be a wind up.

The last place I would ever set foot in would be a chavved Vectra Taxi tbh!
