...for those who grew up in the 80's and 90's

My brother had a red one. Quite nippy and cornered very well for a generally crap car.

It was in amazing condition until an uninsured driver wrote it off.

I soo needed that car to replace the bright orange Austin Metro City 1.0 that i started driving in!

I had something very similar, although thankfully mine was still a reasonable colour of red.

I ripped an scrapped MG apart and filled a Meastro van to the brim - seats, cards, carpet, wheels, dash (that ultimately didn't fit!) for the princely sum of £50. Filled the car full of Pine (remember Pine?) ICE*

*I use the term ICE in the same way Max Power did at the time...i.e. loosely.

I think most folks knew it was an extremely highly polished turd. But so many performance cars were then. The Fiat Strada Abarth, The Escort RS1600i, Vauxhall Cavalier SRi130 and Calibre versions were all spectactularly hot cars in the 1980's and they were all not very good really and based on proper sheds.

I learnt to drive in one too :) Wouldn't really want one now mind. The 0-60 I remember timing with my mates. I won the award for slowest ever recorded, somethng like 18 seconds. (I was ragging the poop out of it).

That example is no good, its not sagging enough at one corner.

These MG metros are like a bad case of the "runs" just when you think the worst is over, it pops back up, slaps you in the face and makes you run for the toilet.

I hate them with a passion and wish they would all die.

My mother had a brown Metro City with beige interior which she kindly let me drive when I was 17. I blew the engine up within a few months.

When I first went to uni I needed a car quickly so I bought the first £500 car that was within a mile of my house, sadly this was also an Austin Metro 1l.

Please forgive me for my sins.

My brother had a turbo and my mum had a 'van den plas' or something. Can't remember if they were any good though!!

Actually, now that I think back I seem to recall that my mum got her brown Metro really cheap because the previous owner had committed suicide in it (pipe from the exhaust into the car).

I can totally understand why.

the vanden had the leather interior, i think they were third party interior suppliers similar to Pininfarina i think, could be wrong though!

my metro was black and had a batman sticker from the dealer in it, there was a promotion at the time linking metros to batman on the telly IIRC, we called it the batmobile, it was a city X model so had nitros, turbos and a veyron engine......

My father-in-law had one and the Metropolitan police used drive around in bog standard ones. The only good one out of the Metros was the Metro GTi 16v.
