Upgrading on a budget??

err, thats not high, thats low, however idle doesnt mean much, its load temps you need to pay attention to, >80 is high
He most likely have SpeedStep on though :p

My damn Q6600 overclocked to 3.00GHz with high VID of 1.3125v idle at around 45, 45, 40, 40 (SpeedStep disabled) with Arctic Cooling 7 Pro...I don't have the best of case for air-intake.

Whats the advantage to disabling Speedstep?
You can just leave it on considering you are not overclocking. What SpeedStep does is drop the CPU multiplier from down to x6 to lower the clock speed alongside with the vcore voltage to save energy when idle, and will bump the multipler and vcore voltage back up as soon as under load. Most people that overclock would disable Speedstep, as the sudden change in vcore voltage might cause instability and crashs.

Disabling speedstep will force your computer to run the processor at full speed as opposed to running at a 6x multi.

I am still not convinced by overclocking

Well, for example, my i5 750 runs happily at 4.0GHz - that's a massive 50% overclock. Since finding my stable settings it has quite simply never crashed. Took me a week or so of evenings plus some weekend time if I recall to read some guides, learn my way around the settings (I'd been out of the overclocking game for about 10 years since my trusty old PIII), setup the overclock and find stability. Easy peasy lemon squeazy :) Still not convinced?

Its all down to you but you could easily overclock that little puppy and see some good gains with minimal effort, usually I love spending other peoples money on these forums but in your case I would hold on to your hard earned notes a little longer.

BTW what ddr are you using... PC2-6400(800Mhz) or PC2-8500(1066Mhz)

CPU Z says PC2-6400(400Mhz)

No as it is my main pc that I do work on, I don't want to run the risk of any crashes or data loss.

So overclocking is not an option for me.
Hey ichabod crane :)

Of course OverClocking is an option for you . . . its just you don't know much about it and therefore have ruled it out! :p

You have some very nice hardware there and in about one hour you could have it OverClocked and stability tested ready to go to work! . . .

Intel® Core™2 Quad Q6600
  • 9 x 266 = 2394
  • 9 x 333 = 2997
To get that Baby up to 3.0GHz on your ASUS P5QL-E is quite easy . . . all you need to do is reboot and enter BIOS and change a few settings in this order . . .

  1. AI Overclock Tuner from [Auto] to [Manual]
  2. FSB Frequency from [Auto] to [333]
  3. Dram Frequency from [Auto] to [DDR2-800]
  4. F10 or Save & Exit

As above, you will absolutely have no problems what so ever, I almost want to do it for you, no one really runs a Q6600 G0 at stock these days :p

Thanks Bid.Wayne, I am not a total noob to overclocking :p would you disable Speedstep or not?

Its more that I don't want to waste the time clocking, checking stability etc...etc...

:D

I wouldn't? . . . why do you want an OverClocked chip sitting there running full pelt when the system is idle?

That was my point also, someone else mentioned earlier that it should be disabled

My reference to crashes may have seemed naive but from back when I used to run a clocked opteron I did have a crash which corrupted windows and required a reinstall, so not really data loss as i said :p but still a pain and something I don't have time for currently.

I guess the current hardware is allot better suited to ocing as people seem to be describing.

Just for you I have put it at 333x9 but its running a high temp 85 under prime95! 51 idle at 333x7

I do not think I would be happy to leave it for a 12hr render at that temperature.

Good man...

Temperature is high but what cooler you using? I go high under prime95, round the 70 degrees mark but that's at 3.8Ghz.

Obviously a good cooler for < £50 and sat at 3Ghz will be a good start. ??
