Why do you think people don’t like the Police?

Because they go after people for pointless trivial offences like speeding and smoking weed instead of going after the true criminals like the ones that:

Because they should be punished. Let me guess they've done you for those.

are selling crack to kids
Kill people
Stole my telly
are Loan Sharks
Fight in Public
etc..

Speeding isn't trivial though really...

For example, speeding through a school zone, or doing 110 on a highway/motorway.

They have but they've still not found my telly or the people who stole it which I believe would be greater use of their time.

no it isnt

It will have been sold down the pub / carboot sale / mates within days and long gone. These type of offenders usually repeat offend, so he will get caught eventually

Just claim on your house insurance and get a new one !

theres speeding and theres speeding

110 on the motorway when its 5pm rush hour, and they tail gaiting people, pulling dangerous over takes and chopping from lane to lane is dangerous. This type of motorist needs to be dealt with

However, waiting on a motorway in the dark at 1am looking at an empty motorway in the hope of somebody comming along at some point in the small hours doing 100 is where people have a problem.

At 1am when the motorway is empty, there is no reason why a modern car isnt perfectly safe at this speed with 3 empty lanes and visibility far into the distance theres more than enough time to react to anything that might happen.

But its the coppers who hide, and catch people speeding for the sake of speeding that people have a problem with.

A lot of officers are decent respectable people but the force itself is tainted by incidents of corruption and brutality and while that does not mean they all behave this way it does bring a lot of natural distrust.

Most of the police that I've encountered have been nice enough but I have been stopped and searched more times that I'd like really, it can be rather annoying!

Law is held up as one of the most important aspects of our society for the simple reason it is one of the most important aspects of our society, it regulates what is and is not allowed at the time (broadly) according to the prevailing mores of the age. You don't particularly have to like it or even respect it but if you transgress against it then (assuming you are caught) you'll have problems - if that's a risk you are willing to take then that's up to you but please don't complain about it should you find yourself facing up to the punishment. The law is a tool, if you want to blame something for the evils that go on in the World then blame people - they're at the root of the problem.

There seems to be a new question or two from Virdi everyday at the moment, it's a bit like having cleanbluesky back but not as wordy and without the guise of social experiments behind the topic. In answer to the original question - I neither especially like or dislike the police as a body, there are good and bad people in it the same as any other occupation under the sun.
I have every right to complain about the law if I break any of its arbitrary regulations. Why shouldn't I? The will of others is being imposed on me, even if what I do is completely peaceful, without justification other than "it's the law". Well, screw the law. I couldn't give a crap about it. I did not choose to be born in to a place and time that controls my existence. I have every right to be alive and to peacefully do as I please. Until the law reflects that fact, I'll have nothing to do with it and will deride it at every opportunity.

You are, however, right on one thing - it's people at the root of the problem. So, why accept a concept created by people to rule over others for the benefit of the few?

This is what happened to me.

Question:

Why do you think people don’t like the Police?

I like my friends and family - I respect and value the police just as I do the armed forces.

Having met a few people in the forces I couldn't say I like them, they're nutters and animals, but I still respect and value them for what they do.

Unlike the forces though you have much more chance of coming into personal contact with a police officer and you may well find you don't like them.

Just don't confuse like with respect and you'll be fine.

If you're going to ignore what is quite clearly set out then I'm requesting you don't whinge about it because it's unseemly if nothing else - if someone is going to act tough about their disregard for the law then break down like a sap when their actions catch up with them then I lose respect for that. Disregard the law and take your punishment like a stoic or follow the law and you shouldn't run into any problems.

It also depends on what you class as completely peaceful, you may well be a risk to other people even if you've got no intention of harming them therefore for their benefit you must be stopped from your actions.

I did not choose to be born in to a place and time that controls my existence. I have every right to be alive and to peacefully do as I please. Until the law reflects that fact, I'll have nothing to do with it and will deride it at every opportunity.

You're right, you didn't choose to be born here but perhaps you should move to a place where the law is more conducive to your mindset? Once you've reached the age of majority you have, in effect, acceded to be ruled by the prevailing law in the country as at that point you could move somewhere else which is more to your taste - if you can't find such a place then perhaps it's time to re-examine what or who is the problem here.

You are, however, right on one thing - it's people at the root of the problem. So, why accept a concept created by people to rule over others for the benefit of the few?

Because we do require some form of regulation to determine what is and is not permissable - you might be a standup guy who'll never harm another and will always help old ladies across the road but your neighbour, well, he's a bit of a git and thieves while beating up people - do we not need something to deal with him?

Law benefits many, it may benefit some more than others but c'est la vie.

I had a high opinion of the police. Until I had reason to deal with them. Then my opinion changed somewhat.

I apologise if this is an overly simplistic viewpoint for this thread, but I can only speak to personal experience. I still view the police as a force for good overall, but in the future will avoid dealing with them unless I have absolutely no other choice.

Don't really like or dislike them but everytime I've gone to them I get no help at all.

I have a huge amount of respect for the police. Having been out with them for a few days, watching first hand at the rubbish they have to put up with etc. Yeah, you'll get a few power trippy ones, but all in all, they do an incredible job in the face of this country in this day in age

All my police experience's have been negative.

I got burgled, they came out and told me that nothing would happen, even though they had an idea who'd done it (and many others in the area)
Stopped by the police at 6am for crossing from one side of the road to the other to enter a bridleway, in doing so rode on the wrong side of the empty road (less cop car still 200m away) for around 5-10m.
Stopped for a head lamp being out and treated like I'd intentionally drove with it out.

Like all services though, you complain about bad incidents but don't shout so loudly about all the times you're not a victim of crime.
