Few hours ago was on my way to the girlfriends house in my daily driver (Mk4 Golf GT TDi 150) was following a transit van then all of a sudden I seen something big come from underneath it, soon as I realised it was solid I hit the brakes but too late S.M.A.C.K felt and heard it cause havoc under the car but it still drive ok and no warning lights were on...

Soon as possible I pulled off into a layby, no sooner had I stopped moving the car beeped loudly at me, oil light came on and it said STOP on the screen so obviously turned it off straight away to avoid oil starvation, got out and was faced with this:

Gutted!!!   Just been recovered home now by RAC, properly split the sump open, went back to see and I left nearly a mile long line of oil like in the 2nd pic. I also let the fire brigade know and they are sending a team out to clear it up as it would be a big danger to bike users :(
Gutted as I am, if I was in the Evo it would have taken the bumper, intercooler and god knows what else but its still a pain in my wallet I didnt need!

Its extra annoyed me because I only changed the oil 2 weeks ago to expensive Mobile1 5w30 fully synth, oh and very spookily the speedo stopped on 106660 when it happened!

****!

That is some seriously bad luck, not much else to say really. Solid rock to do that damage, lets hope the engine hasn't been starved of oil :(

10660 oh err !!

fingers crossed the engines ok if its only just been topped up. It wouldnt have started to get dangerous till you you'd let at least a litre out.

What a royal pain in the backside. :(

Glad you're ok though. Hopefully it's just a new sump and oil that are needed...

Damn, that's pretty bad! Hopefully no long term damage to the engine, did you move the rock when you went back? Good shout on reporting the oil spill, will you/your insurance co. have to pay for the clean up of the road?

what you want to do is lower that car, about 80-100mm. rocks would no longer be a problem as theyre snow ploughed by the bumper and subframe.

i cant even get my fist between the ground and the subframe yet nothing at the front has made contact with the ground once

You must have a damn strong bumper if it scoops speed cushions off the road.

it is really odd. i never intended the car to be as low as it is. ive seen the GF drive it off the driveway and the clearance under the car is 1cm-2cm (less than 1cm between the bumper and ground as you drive off the driveway)

you have to be careful with speed bumps but im used to that, ive had plenty of low cars.

the rear of the car has a brace along its belly (running under the fuel tank) which has grounded hard at 100 odd on a dual carriageway.

the front, however, has never grounded which is a good thing.

driveshaft rubs the body/chassis leg from time to time. ive had to put a TT front ARB on to give clearance too

The engine will be fine as long as you switched it off as soon as the oil light came on.

Fingers crossed yes.

Had similar happen to me yonks ago on a 206 GTi. Missread a corner, understeered badly, managed to recover some grip and made a curve on a gravel. Much happiness at avoiding huge boulders separating me from the Mediterranean sea, until I realized far too late that a rather large manhole cover was right infront of me.

Damage? New front bumper, new sump, and iirc some oil pickup or equivalent got hosed badly inside the sump. Switched the car off as soon as I hit it, pretty much every light on the dashboard lit up.

Few days repair*, car ran fine, still see it occasionally. Going nigh on 10 years.

*Car was actually sat for a week waiting for parts, sat outside, in late Spring, which is basically Seagull season + hot temperatures. Cue massive arguments and respraying of bonnet and roof for free, the car was caked in guano.

should be fine :)

but consider a steel belly pan for future safety. you can get a proper vw one for £100

Damn! as above fingers crossed you can get the sump repaired and its all fine!

Good on you too for getting the fire brigade to sort the oil!

Hit a badger the other week which kindly removed most of my undertray, its the second one i've hit in a year, someone should teach them how to cross roads.

I'd be getting rid of it as soon as it's got a new sump on and oil in it as with most engines once the oil light is on damage has already occured. If you do intend to keep it then I'd definately consider checking the oil pump for any possible damage as they really don't like being run low on oil.
