Suitable dogs with young children

Spaniels are fine, but not cocker spaniels.

My vote is for Lab or, if you get one from a smaller lineage as they can get HUGE, a boxer.

Boxers are awesome.

This spaniel nipped 2 kids but when it went for my own daughter we had to get rid.
Horrible dogs -

OP, at least you're making the best choice of getting a dog after the child was born so that the dog will know it's place.
I would never recommend bringing a child into a home when the dog is already established in there.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but was exactly is the difference between a KC registered dog and a non registered one? Is it really worth paying a lot more money for one?

KC is just a way of ensuring the pedigree of the dog, if you don't care about it then you shouldnt worry about it.

Unless the kid has some sort of Immunodeficiency and the op cleans the house on occasion that'll be fine

Agreed but still not great.

My friend has a dog and it came in his house once with cat crap over its paws obviously if you know about it before the kids do then ya can stop them from getting it on there hands/mouth :( etc.

I have a lurcher - softest dog in the world.

We'd go to the park with her, and as she's white with black patches on, (stupid) children would think she's a dalmatian and flock round her, pulling at her, patting her, practically swinging off her neck - she'd just stand there.

Don't need a great deal of exercise either, great if you have a baby and not loads of time to spare - we take ours out twice a day to a field nearby, she runs round in a circle for ten minutes, we take her home, she sleeps the rest of the day. Always has done, we've had her since she was 8 months, she's now 11, and she's always been the same.

One vote for lurchers!

It just all depends on the temperament of the dog and i wouldnt exactly say the breed.

Ive had two Jack Russell's,one was absolutley fine with kids the other was a nightmare.

Got a Cocker Spaniel at the moment and she is great around kids.
