I recently bought F1 2010 from Steam and wanted to change my gamer tag in GFWL to the name I use in Steam. You would think this is straight forward thing to do but they wanted to charge me 800 gamer points for this, 1000 points costs £8.50!

£8.50 for a name change, who the hell in their right mind would pay for this crap!

Does anyone else have any GFWL woes they would like to get off their chest?

In regards to the thread title: No

Bought Batman: AA, downloaded on 3 computers, GFWL gives me 200kb/s more than Steam, all good.

Bought Dead Rising 2, installed, registered, automatically updated the game, all good.

In regards to the question: Yes

Could do with matching the interface to the 360 one, it's much better.

Its crud that gives me nothing of advantage and at best puts an extra layer to deal with in enjoying the games I play and at worst stops me playing those games.

I like the linking of my pc games to my Live account and the ability to communicate with my friends while they on the 360

I've never had any issues with it with the 5/6 games I own that use it
Just needs a visual update

I used to think GFWL was just irrelevant but lately I've come to the conclusion that it is not irrelevant, it is in fact quite a nice pile of crap. So many problems with it and Microsoft has nothing in years to fix any of the issues and design problems just like the name change or no multiplayer for most of the world. Or losing save games even though you back up the files. Or not being able to have my X360 on with my profile logged in while playing a GFWL game. Or the limited installations issue with no fix in sight. GFWL login issues.

I'm afraid ten years into the future most GFWL games are unplayable because the GFWL servers have been shut down and your profile is stuck on their servers. Offline profile isn't much help to those who want to play multiplayer too.

Not a fan of GFWL. Microsoft could at least try to improve it but no, doesn't seem to fit their plan.

I think it's terrible. The linking of games to accounts which then prevents any online gaming because you don't happen to live in one of the very few supported countries is ****. Yes, I know you can lie and create an account registered in a different country but you can't then transfer the broken game to it. So most people only find out about this after they've already lost one game.

Not a great introduction to the service.

Why should you be able to have your 360 logged in while playing a gfwl title?
A lot of things wont let you log in in multiple locations, Steam doesn't.

I've never lost a save game or had issues logging in.

I bet you also haven't been murdered, but other people do, have, and will continue to do so.

No problems with it what so ever. Like the fact that it's the same profile as I use my Xbox, and I wasn't stupid enough to register a GamerTag that I didn't like so have no problems with needing to change it.

In addition to games already loading through Steam then yes, it's unnecessary, but that's as bad as it gets.

Some of the over-the-top reaction to a game including GFWL is just pathetic and childish.

I can log into any game with any of my GFWL CD keys that uses this for online. Handy for when i can't find the CD key for Fallout or another game but quite a bad bug, ill say its a bug anyways.

I have had issues with it, its very very poor in comparison to steam.
I had no end of bother registering bioshock 2 for instance, bought through steam, and still have to use gfwl or I cannot play it. Whats the point?

The major problem I have with GFWL is that there is no benefit to it.

I can't download games I have registered with my GFWL account (unlike Steam)
I can't add, remove or communicate with friends on GFWL unless I'm logged into a game (unlike Steam (and also inexcusable since all MS would need is a modified version of MSN messenger))
I can't buy games using my credit card and have to use some crappy MS points thing (unlike Steam)
I can't go offline without losing access to my savefile (unlike Steam)
I can't play the game immediately after download and instead have to install the game (unlike Steam)
I can't use their GFWL client to manage my games (Unlike Steam)

Basically all GFWL does is get in the way of me gaming, Steam provides a much better experience and MS should either be trying to better Steam or at the very least copy it.

15 year old boys.

My stepson paid to change his name. He has also paid for backgrounds. This was on Xbox Live but it amounts to the same thing. There are more of those type of gamers than us and their parents are prepared to pay for stuff that kids want. I would point out that my stepson used his own money and I gave him plenty of stick over it.

Handy for linking the 360 to the PC for those games. Use Steam with the F1 as well so all good.

What do you think of Games For Windows Live?

A clunky underpolished clumsy multiplayer interface

Totally agree. It's about time they started patching it out of games and leaving it to it's slow death.
