Is the grass greener on the other side (America)??

As others have said $35k is nothing in the USA. The nicest parts of the USA will have similar living costs to London.

Is it greener? yes it is. Will 35k be enough? no way in hell. As has been said, you get ill? you pay, need dental work? you pay A LOT. Do way more research into this if you are serious about it.

Surly the size of America means prices vary hugely. Some places you could buy two houses for 35k. Go more out in the sticks and I would be surprised if you couldn't live a good life on that. All though I'm only guessing.

And you intend to do what exactly if you require medical care?

Well, I'm looking into health care.
I have tonnes of family there, enough money back here in the UK to come back if I really need to.
If all goes well, after Arizona I'll be employed and actually have health care anyway.

I have assets here in the UK that I can tap if I really need to for extra cash.
I also have a huge family spread across america. I'm going to look into health care anyway.
Plus, a plane ticket back isn't going to be more than £800. It's not that hard to raise £800 on short notice. Especially if it's a health matter I'm sure my brother or other family would be willing to help. Plus I have a small fortunes worth of rare guitars.

You've not really got any idea what you are doing have you?

If you get hit by a car crossing the street you won't be buying an £800 plane ticket to fly back to the UK. You could be facing medical bills of tens of thousands of dollars which you wont be able to pay, possibly hundreds of thousands of dollars.

You could be totally, totally screwed.

You really need to do a LOT more homework because you don't seem to realise the mavity of what you think you are going to do.

Also, keep in mind that if things don't work out well for you in the U.S, you will find it hard to get employment back here in the UK. The British medical fraternity doesn't look favourably on its own graduates jumping ship ....

As others have said, it may not be as easy as you think getting in to the U.S to begin with visa wise. For the first few years it will definitely be hard, as you work long hours for poor pay. But, after that ( if you've made it ) then you will start earning very handsomely. Personally, I prefer Canada ...and think you would have more chance of succeeding there.

Most airlines won't let you fly if you're injured/sick to a certain extent.

Meh, I'm not particularly worried tbh.
So if I get hit by a car so be it. I'm sure they won't leave me lying splattered on the road. And unless I have some kind of freak accident requiring instant expensive surgery I should be okay. I'm fairly sure Eugene Oregon is probably safer than inner city London.

Just don't pay the bill. They still have to treat you. What do you think all those Mexicans do?

Only something like a half of patients actually pay their bills, that's part of why it's so expensive. And if you do pay they let you spread it out for like 10 years at $50 a month with no interest. They will also give you massive reductions if you haggle.

Natima, are you saying you're going to migrate to the US but use the UK's health care system if you really need to? a health care system which (at 19) you will barely have paid into? nice one

i often wonder what kind of health bill the kind of people i see on these documentaries where people go out on a night and get absoloutely bladdered would be? maybe if we charged them for their antics, they wouldn't do it..

Actually they can and do if your not insured in some cases.

You've got no idea what you are doing. Usually this is quite amusing because the end result is somebody buys a rubbish car or the wrong graphics card but seriously this is the rest of your life you might screw up. What are you going to do if your dream guitar company wont hire you?

Secure a job, then move over there. Then you can live there properly. I mean seroiusly, relying on the fact that if you needed medical care you could fly to the UK, just.. lol?

I am extremely lucky to have an American passport, but up until this exact moment in my life I have never had the oppurtunity to go to the US. Not even to visit my family. Now I have that chance due to a friend living there inviting me to stay.
For me it's the oppurtunity of a life time to go and visit family, learn a trade I'm extremely passionate about, to hopefully start a life long career and also experience an entirely different part of the world.
If I get sick and need to come back then I will. If I can.

I don't even understand the latter half of your post. Are you trying to impose a stereotype on me? What do the antics of the misguided documentary binge drinking mobs have to do with me?

I have dual nationality and have spent about a third of my life in the US, going to the US with a little over $1000 and not much else means you're going to be in a pretty desperate place quite quickly.

Do you have a job lined up or just wishing to work for a guitar manufacturer?

Commune?, sound like you are either trolling or making a huge miscalculation on exactly what the US means when you have no means of supporting yourself.

Btw, No insurance?, join the queue at the community med centre then. Don't pay the bill? Say hello to Fed Pen. That'll be fun for a 19 year old.

I thought you were going to a commune?

How come you already have a US passport if you've never been there? Surely you must apply for one first?

Yes you do. It is an absolute nightmare, although you can do it via the US embassy you need not have ever visited the US.

I wonder how he qualifies specifically.

One thing i heard from 2 Americans yesterday, we were in Boots.

"I love the fact that what you see is what you pay here"

Referring to the sales tax in the states, they don't label it on the shelf but added on at the till so you either do the sums in your head or move to Oregon where there is no sales tax.

Edit, i posted that without reading the thread.

Natima - you are a brave man, or stupid one, but typical teenager mentality really, think they are invincible.

This really is SO ANNOYING. Everywhere you go except for gas stations where gas is priced inclusive of tax, everything is 'plus applicable taxes'. Everyone has to pay the tax so why they are not legally required to show tax INCLUSIVE prices as per the UK I've no idea.
