No it's not, a monitor of equal size would have much higher resolution because you're using it so close compared to a tv.

surely a monitor is just the display...has nothing to do with tv's, computers etc etc.

24 inch tv at 16:9 with 1900x1080 < yeah fine for use as a monitor

24 inch monitor at 16:10 1920x1200 < good

42 inch tv at 16:9 1200x1080 < nah

Is it really poor that Im considering replacing my 24" moniter (sic) with a 40" HDTV as I thought paying all that for a 32" I could put in a bit more and normally get a better quality 40" as 32" is still quite niche and so relatively expensive...

You will destroy your eyes - tho not any worse/better than any other monitor. Eyes aren't supposed to spend long hours at a time focused on something that close.

Is there any ophthalmology evidence to back this up?

Anyway, I destroyed mine about 40 years ago.

I probably sit about 30"+ away from my 24" screen but then again it's uber quality and calibrated so eyestrain is minimal at the very least

When setting up stuff on the media PC in the living room (45" TV) I can tell from the pixels that a HDTV is inferior for PC usage compared to non TN panel PC monitor, perfectly fine for movie watching though (obviously).
