We are the laziest in Europe...Britain, the jobless capital. Wonderful

hmm we have a unemployment rate of 8.7%.. lets compare it :

France : 10.1
Germany : 7.3%
Spain : 19.1%
Italy : 8.8%
Average for the EU = 9.6%
USA : 9.7%

Can anyone think of a positive spin on this?

And as people have previously said, workless household does not always mean there's a problem. ILO surveys are the benchmark for measuring unemployment around the world.

This study uses the criterion of "economically inactive". That covers a lot of things.

It's cheaper to import someone already with the necessary skills than to take someone on and train them up.

Joblessness is avoidable.

Edit: Let's not confuse being unemployed with joblessness. People who want to work may take a while to find new employment, and that's fine. The problem is cradle-to-grave benefit claimants.

The working class British are lazy, have a week off with 'flu' or 'stress' when they have a cold, have one working speed and that is **** off. They also look to seek 'compo' when they have a work accident through their own stupidity. They also won't work overtime because then they won't get their 'tax credits'.

I am British and (if I had a business) if I required low skill work then I'd employ a Polish worker over a British worker. Simple.

On topic - There are many people in the UK who are so lazy that they have no intention of retaining a job.

The issue here is that there are two statistics that are used in this discussion, one is the basic unemployment percentage but what this story is about is the percentage of households where everyone is unemployed.

84% unemployment rate in some of the worst council housing out there?

Shock horror.

Next they'll be saying in an asylum seeker centre, 100% of the residents are living on asylum seeker benefits.

I have said several times in past posts in other threads. The government should do all it can to prevent the concentration of poverty like this. It is I believe the greatest barrier to social mobility. The knock on effects on local education establishments as well as for the aspirations of children growing up in these types of places are disastrous.

So you wouldn't mind the worst chavs being sent to your kids school? Or their family moved in next door?

They tried that in American with 'busing' and 'section 8' and it was a total failure. The places they were moved to were just ruined. It's better to keep them concentrated. Has it occurred to you they actually ENJOY living like that?

There are also hard working people that through no fault of their own have been unable to get a job, for many reasons.

thats the % of people that could be employed ... that arent.

The key there is "could" these unemployment figures dont include the scores of people on benefits. They arent unemployed because they are registered disabled.

The coalition government has already admitted that the number of people on permanent disability is of concern so its not just the daily mail scare mongering.

"They". Are they supposed to be a different creature with different impulses? People are shaped by their environment and not genetically predisposed to wanting to live in poverty.

Ultimately I'm a believer in targeting internalities, where the state has a clear duty of care i.e. minors.

They began the reassessment today in Edinburgh iirc.

But as per the OP. I am a Lazy sod, but I have never claimed benefit (although at one time I could have) and I have a full-time Job. I have a friend who doesn't work, (doesn't want to either, no matter how often I rib him for it) yet he is always doing stuff around the house and for his mates etc...so it doesn't necessarily correlate that Benefits=Lazy.

Employers are to blame for the usual 'Experience Required'. Many of the jobless people have lot of potential but they are overlooked as the usual cv and cover letter is required which is too narow for listing all the skills:mad:.

I am an unemployed engineering graduate myself and given the chance of good mentorship (which is never gonna happen) I am sure I can use a lot of my potential but since being constantly turned down; now I have a big unemployment gap on my CV. When I send my CV it goes in the bin. What am I supposed to do?.

Poor families live together because that's all they can afford.

But by so many people higher up the social ladder writing them off and telling them that they are scum and will never amount to anything they've learned just to live with it.

So your solution is simply to damn them and create a situation where we can fence them off and forget about them without even trying to help.

It's opinions like that that cause this type of social stigma and makes the situation worse. If people took some time and actually gave people a chance then they might surprise you.
