Apple TV

Now while I can see it's appeal, I believe this to be an unwise purchase, I use a sumvison network media player that does all what apple tv does, play off iTunes etc as well as off a shared folder be it a mac or pc, as well as playin vastly more video formats in a similarly small and attractive box under the telly. For this reason I'm out, I do use other apple products (iPhone and MacBook) while using a pc for my powerful computing stuff, it's just not worth it over the cheaper sumvison for less money and identical function (if ur playin off iTunes)

Tell us more...

basically i used a program to create a bootable usb stick, which then the aTV can boot from (more i think about it the more it is a jailbreak) which you then flash the OS. Lets you have ssh and install xbmc or boxee with a few clicks

remember the aTV1 runs a modified version of tiger which is why i would class this more of a softmod than a jailbreak as im installing extra onto this

Mines arrived, set up in 5mins. Jobs a good 'un.

Menus are fluid, plays everything nicely as expected. Only thing I had to do was disable IR control on my iMac cos the ATV remote was controlling all kinds of things on there :>

Im not a huge media whore, might get a few movies from time to time, It would be nice if LoveFilm got on board with this, but they have no plans at the moment.

Quite happy with it :>

Not sure this will happen now, LoveFilm just signed a seal with Sony PS3, service launches in November.

I really liked the look of the Apple TV but having owned a WDTV before I opted for the WDTV Live. Its now hooked up to my Apple Time Capsule and working great, it'll play just about any movie format. You can also use Youtube, flickr etc.

Got mine setup tonight. Loving it so far apart from two minor issues.

I set it up over wifi originally, but as the router and aTV sit next to each other I thought I would connect via ethernet cable. Since doing this I am unable to connect to the home share on my iMac upstairs over wifi.

Second minor niggle is that you can't easily select an individual artist or album to accompany a slide show without doing it the long winded way of starting the track before the slideshow.

Any thoughts? Thanks

While I like the look of AppleTV, does it actaually do anything you don't get with WMC and an Xbox 360?

It's completely silent. You can't say that for an Xbox 360. I tried streaming using my 360 a long time ago and gave up very quickly because of the noise.

I glance this comment sir, I glance it and raise a suspicious eyebrow ! How old is your xbox ?, mines utterly silent unless there is a DVD in the drive, I have 2 xbox'x and there both zero noise unless theres a disc in the drive, which I dont have unless im installing a game, and as I type this I just remembered my house mate using it to watch a dvd last night, and you just couldn't hear the xbox, iv obviously not stuck my head on the side of it to try and hear, but suffice to say I CANNOT hear it from the sofa when there is nothing playing on it, and obviously when there is something playing , a film or whatever than its even less likely anyone would hear it.

As I said 4-5 posts up, the sumvision lays sweet superiority over any of the devices anyway for less money and does exactly the same as apple tv, even plays off itunes ;)

I hadn't heard of the sumvision before, so I did a bit of searching around. From what I can see the sumvision has hugely ugly menus. When sitting at your tv the average consumer wants a fluid, intuitive and beautiful experience. People don't want to navigate through folders and pick files based on file names - they want nice box art as if they were picking a dvd off of the shelf. You can pretty it up a little by putting the traxdata firmware on the old model, but will the average consumer even know what firmware is? Avforums is also a hive of complaints about being able to play media properly on the sumvision, which is a concern, and it appears that you can no longer play youtube clips on it? Finally, it's not silent and, as has been mentioned before, that's a big bug-bear for a lot of people.

The WDTV is pretty close, but requires a load of hacking to look like this:

It's over three years old, I can't comment on the newer models because I don't know what sort of sound they make (or don't) because I have no experience of them.

Has anybody else had problems with home sharing over ethernet?

My aTV sits right next to the Sky (Sagem) wi-fi router, when my aTV is connected to the wi-fi network I can access my iMac wirelessly no problems. When I hook up an ethernet cable to the router and re-connect it to the wired network in the aTV settings I am unable to see my iMac library, yet can still access other content such as trailers and youtube.

Any suggestions here? Have tried looking through the Apple support forums and nobody seems to have the same problem.

Also, what have peoples experience of the streaming service been like? On paper (stream HD movies instantly...), and during the keynote movies seemed to be ready to watch within a few seconds of buffering/caching. In reality, a HD movie took 35 minutes to be "ready to watch" last night which was annoying to say the least.... On the plus side, once the film was ready to watch, we had zero interruptions/stuttering, and the picture/sound quality was excellent.

Im on Sky unlimited broadband package (20mps headline) however we only get 3.5mps download on a good day due to the quality and distance of the line to the exchange so I guess that would be the cause of the poor streaming performance.

Fixed the home haring issue, sounds stupid now but had to turn off/on home sharing on both the iMac and aTV.

Going to order a pair of those ethernet over power adapters too tonight, should hopefully squeeze a bit better performance out of my broadband connection.
