Long term PSU Choice

That's one area im considering stulid, currently have sli gtx 275's, may go to a single gtx 470 when prices drop, then add another later, (possibly secondhand). I tend too avoid buying new high end gpu's.

Tbf the op did state that he's looking for a long term psu. Buying an 850W one now that he keeps for years means he doesn't have to worry about power for his next build. That Saphire would not power sli 480's (according to that chart anyway) and it's too close for my liking to do so with 470's.

Oh ok . . . I get it . . what you are saying is that its a good idea for Arthalen to spend £75-£100 extra for a PSU on the off chance that in the future he may decide to buy £700 pound of GPU's! . . . how silly of me! :D

Done some power testing the other day with my power meter and see what my rig pulled from the mains, specs in sig:

615w with Prime & Fur Mark running
405w with Prime running
503w with Fur Mark running
272w Idle

That's for him to decide. He's the one that specified it's for long term use. I'm just letting him know that it won't be powerful enough to run sli'd 480's.

I did do some but can't remember the actual figures, can do some tomorrow. :(

When I had crossfire 5850 these pulled around 430w with 3d win mark 2006.

well that chart was for Setter and his HX850, you asked,

Hey setter :)
is there a good "reason" someone would want to spend that much money when they could spend almost a 1/3? . . . what is it you guys know that I don't! :p

I responded with GTX470 or 480?

you post some power consumption chart of 3dmark.

I show that one from Anandtech asking waht if he wants to stress test?

you have managed to take my suggestion for the OP and use it in a argument with Setters choice of HX850, well done!!:D

so if someone wants to stress test their pc to make sure its all tickity boo?

Well if Arthalen does indeed does change his GPU plans from this:

GPU - 5870 spec or above (looking at a single top end 6xxx series GPU when released)

to this:

then this will be no good either!

I never mentioned anything about that psu(AX850)

that sapphire unit is a good psu, good price, (short cables according to MOOGLEYS) it certainly has a place in many a pc build, I remember pointing it out to you way back when in a spec me thread too.

but the OP did state "long term" which if its like a good monitor and giant case, could be years, and will see him through many pc components.

. . . I am just helping Arthalen "examine" the reasons why he is spending such a large premium of this PSU!

corsair psu are a quality unit from a quality OEM manufacturer, excellent RMA service, nice long cables,

found the sapphire warranty, its less than halve at 3years:D
