Anyone excited for windows phone 7?

Very nice looking so far.

Tethering is something I will need, so i hope it is available. Even if it requires an app to do it.
Copy/Paste was thought to have been surplus to requirements with the intergration/auto-recognition of phone numbers/addresses/etc, but is going to be added early next year. MS actually listening to customer requirments, and acting :)

Windows Mobile has always been a poor cousin product for MS, but it does really look like they are pushing the boat out and really going for this market.

I am due for an upgrade on 21st of October :D I shall be getting hands on with the devices that day. Orange UK are pushing the HTC 7 Mozart, and Samsung OMNIA 7. HTC for me pleeassee

Urgh, what are people on about, it looks terrible.

So many standard features missing and the interface looks shocking.

I sense another fail from Microsoft ;)

Does anyone do 12 month contracts anymore?

I noticed that i accidentally accepted an 18 month contract last time, and really would rather stay at 12 months for the future. (Im a £60+ a month user) Been with Orange for over a decade...

I'm confused...

Premium OS with high requirements but no multitasking or other premium features.
Xbox live gaming platform but the HD7 has a old snapdragon with crappy gfx.

Have I missed the point of this os?

Some key points from the GSM Arena review:

Key features:

* Premium mobile OS (high minimum hardware requirements)
* Clean, uncluttered interface with distinctive design language
* Easy and thumbable user interface
* Smooth operation with cool animations and transition effects
* A fresh start with no legacy support needed
* Backed up and developed by one of the largest software companies in the world
* Excellent MS Office mobile implementation
* Top-notch social integration
* Excellent cloud services integration (SkyDrive, Windows Live, Xbox Live)
* Wireless syncing of multimedia content

Main disadvantages:

* No system-wide file manager
* No videocalling
* Limited third-party apps
* No Bluetooth file transfers
* No USB mass storage mode
* No memory card support
* No multitasking
* No copy paste
* Too dependent on Zune software for computer file management and syncing
* No music player equalisers
* No Flash or Silverlight support in the web browser
* No sign of free Bing maps Navigation so far
* No DivX/XviD video support
* No tethering over USB/Bluetooth

How often did Microsoft release updates for WinMo?

Well looking at that the disadvantages far out number the advantages, I'll be sticking with Android I think :D

I actually like the look of it as its a bit different, but will it be very practical? Probably not.

Its more of a direct rival to iOS than Android, both are more watered down and 'flashy'.

Android is still leading the way for most phone enthusiasts. I do want to try one though, perhaps the support/updates will increase its functionality some more.

I'd agree 110%

To me there is nothing in the W7 phone info so far that would make me want to rush out and buy one.

Everytime I've "thought maybe I'll give Winmob another go" in the past I end up selling the phone in a very short time as I feel there are way too many limitations on the OS and I can't see W7 phone being any better from what I've read - Sorry Steve Ballmer :D

Still trying to find any positives over iOS/android, WP7 looks all smoke and mirrors.

Maybe MS should just run the ad "Smartphone, dumb users.." or "come on jobs, gimme a piece of that sweet apple pie" :p

(love W7 so would like to be proved wrong)

I'm one of the few big fans of WM6.1 pro... and I'd far far rather use Android than WM7 which seems to be a step backwards in every regard.

Im due an upgrade on the 22nd so I think the HTC HD7 or Desire HD will be ideal. Leaning more towards the HD7 though!

i think the sammy omnia 7 is the one for me.

i was planning on getting the htc HD 7 but i think its a tad too big and the sammy is soooo sexy and has that loverly super amoled screen.

Not all those points are entirely accurate or, I would suggest, a problem for the vast majority of phone users though to be honest (comments inline although i realise I'm risking life and limb doing so in the Android forum ;) )

Main disadvantages:

* No system-wide file manager - For the majority of average users I can't see this is any problem tbh.
* No videocalling - shame but not a particularly heavily used feature I don't think
* Limited third-party apps - 2000 Apps for launch, not a bad start for day 1 - quality over quantity sometimes is a good thing. Don't underestimate the size of the MS developer community if WP7 takes off....
* No Bluetooth file transfers - Handy but a pretty geek specific feature most of the time.
* No USB mass storage mode - Not sure the average user ever used/will miss this outside geek central ;).
* No memory card support - Def a miss, and an odd one at that... Maybe it'll follow on later hardware?
* No multitasking - Not strictly true, Apps signed by MS can multitask (i.e. you can read email and listen to music at the same time).
* No copy paste - Context cut and pace at launch (i.e. it recognises things like phone numbers and lets you copy, similar to previous iOS builds) and full cut and paste update promised ofr early 2011
* Too dependent on Zune software for computer file management and syncing - Assuming you have a Windows PC I don't see this as a problem to be honest.
* No music player equalisers - Scaraping the bottom of the barrel here really
* No Flash or Silverlight support in the web browser - Yep, bad choice although MS have already said they are happy for flash to be integrated if Adobe want to. Offset perhaps by a degree of HTML5 support in the future?
* No sign of free Bing maps Navigation so far - The free Bing app for Windows Mobile does turn by turn navigation so I'd be suprised if the WP7 version didn't
* No DivX/XviD video support - Bit of a pain I agree
* No tethering over USB/Bluetooth - Yep, no idea why, seems an odd choice.

How often did Microsoft release updates for WinMo? MS didn't, updates had to go via manufacturers and operators who had no incentive to add functionality when they would rather you bought a new device to get feature. For WP7 MS controls updates direct to the device line Windows 7 (or Apple with iPhone for that matter)

The more I look at this, its just basically an iPhone made by Microsoft, it has almost all the same sort of limitations in place, with the added bonus of better social integration and the Xbox stuff.

They need to change the name of it, calling it Windows is just lame

Keeping the names of products massively helps sales, it's the reason Sony kept the Playstation and Apple keeps the iPhone, but then the users their aimed at need that extra little help ;)

I've used PAYG for ever, I spent less than a tenner a month. Completely can't justify smartphones - and I bet most smartphone owners can't justify it either!

Erm, what do you mean?

If you want internet features (and a whole range of other things when you are out and about) you need a smartphone.

It can be easily justified, just in the same way a more expensive car can be justified compared to an old banger.
