This is from the BBC website, it gives you a good idea of the scale and distances involved :o

Awesome..just heard as I tuned in;
First of all, thanks to god, without god none of this would be possible......and *pause* thanks...*hesistate*... to the rescuers.

This irk anyone else?

Chile is a very Christian country. Why would you be surprised? If they all make it out alive they'll be very grateful, no doubt, to God and to the people who helped them.

People seem to think that God can't work through people, or that anything involving the actions of people couldn't also be an act of God.

Culturally that is fine but logically it doesn't make sense to people because man has his own choice.

For example, if I decided to shoot a school up tomorrow then that would be my choice but I could spend ages thinking about it or whatever. Or if I decided to risk my life and save a person in a car wreck, that would be my choice through being a human and having a fight or flight reaction - Not through God.

But that's another topic altogether!

Sounds like you know. ;)

Na, your sister told me! ;)

Man has choice because god gave him free choice, some people attribute their actions as being empowered by god or done in gods name, ie a rescue is an incredibly selfless act and thus by the grace of god.

It's only irrational to those that aren't believers.

Don't take the above as a reflection of my own beliefs, I just understand the reasoning behind a freed miner thanking god for his rescue.

Awe, the guy that just came up seemed so happy but almost like he was too embarrassed by the cameras to cry until his wife came over.

I don't like the 10/33 counter. Just seems a bit.. weird.

Likewise not thanking any God but instead man made choice in the roles were reversed.

It's a debate that has no definitive 'right' or 'wrong' among people but one will always argue that freedom of choice was given by God, for example and that is seen as an excuse by many.

Yeah it's been a real mixed bag of reactions, we've had genuine hugs for wives, relief, overwhelmed, and a sort of bizarre touchdown celebration complete with gifts of rocks.

I totally agree, but as these chaps clearly are believers it's kind of "illogical" to question why they are thanking god for their rescue.

These people are religious people, who are firm followers, dont see what the problem is.
Its better than being helped by gazza !

I for one think these guys are heros, and the rescue team, I have never experienced anything like this before and its mindblowing.
Underground, 33 men, 69 days, capsule lifting them up cms away from earth ! WOW these guys deserve all the happiness in the world now
if I had gone thru all that I think I would be turning to god.

How are they heroes? They've not exactly done anything more strenuous than sit on their asses for 2 months.

The rescuers yes, the miners? They're just people who were in the wrong place at the wrong time.
