Britain's Defences

I always thought that allies aside, China could role into Australia and take it over in a matter of days.

Only 4 cities with a population of over a million, all of which are 100's if not 1000's of kilometers away from each other. Add to that that the total population ~21 million is the amount that China's population increases by every year!

And that fact that Australia has almost every useful resource you could want (excluding oil) in abundance... hell I think the UK should get it's colony back - that way we might get some good driving & good tv!!! :p

Let's say for whatever reason, China invaded us directly. Ignoring all the other factors and influences of other countries. One day, China turns up with the majority of its armies on British Coasts. Massive numbers alone will overwhelm us. We would be well and properly...well, you know. ;)

Realistically, China is not going to find it easy to arrive anywhere near Britain. Even if they mobilised their forces, we would hear about it long before it happens.

I can't get past this statement. Why would WWIII start? Who are we expecting to help us in a land invasion? Nato? The USA?

well nato and the EU would be obligated.

but also it would **** the British, Chinese and American economies and therefore everyone else's too.

then there's the whole "when they're done with Britain they may come after us" too line of thought many countries will have.

China would have issues invading us however, such as a lack of strategic airlift and amphibious assault ships, plus all the escorts and logistical assets they'd need to mount and sustain an invasion. China, as it stands are a formidable regional power and would be very bad news for anyone messing with them in their own backyard (i.e. Taiwan), but lack true strategic reach necessary for expeditionary warfare.

Have there been any notable modern invasions of industrialised island nations? I can't think of there being one. It's a huge resource and logistics challenge, but not only that, we have the ability as an island to defend any corner of it almost immediately. I can't even fathom in my head how you could successfully invade Britain without first completely annihilating it with long range missiles.

We could park our entire navy in strategic positions along our coasts, have a large portion of the air force flying around and the rest on high alert, and have hundreds of thousands of well armed troops marching up and down the country and stationed along the borders. What would have to take place to "get in" if we just sat there prepared for it, is simply unthinkable.

Even if you look back to WW2, where we were significantly underpowered and not able to project what power we had quickly, it wasn't possible to invade (of course various reasons for that). If I recall, there were final plans to lace the coasts with ricin, so that any landing forces would be severely reduced in number.

I can see it being very difficuilt for anyone to invade Britain.

In fact I cant see anyone in the world managing it apart from maybe America.

Type 45's, Marines, and Typhoons are not just going to move aside without a serious fight :)

The more I think about it the more I realise how much of a huge task it would be for anyone.

They would invade, we would surrender and there would be Chinese takeaways on each street corner. Wait…….

This

2 ways for them to get here:

Either go through russia & europe join up with amphibious warships on the European coast then launch a seabourne invasion from there. Which they can't do as none of these countries would permit such a large scale foreign troop movement inside their borders, so they'd have to fight their way across the whole landmass.

Or sail through the Idian ocean, up through the suez canal or round Afica, through the med, up through the bay of biscay and land in southern England.

The invasion force would then have to land, with no air support and extremely tired and depleted troops on foriegn soil facing a better trained better equipped largely combat exprienced army on theit home soil who have plenty of air support.

Thats if by some miracle the none existant chinese amphibious forces were't sunk in the med/ bay of biscay by the Royal Navy.

Of course both these senarios will only work in china has the logistical capability, which it doesn't.

Why would they want to invade Britain????

They would just build a human bridge from sheer man power like those little ants that cross rivers on each others backs.

Due to Britain's allies I'd like to think we are too powerful for any country to invade really. We can call up millions of troops and huge resourses from other countries if we so wanted, just like WW2; Aussies, Canadains, Americans, Indians (not the cowboys and indians type :D), etc, and plus, the biggest thing we've got going for us is, we're British!

Don't count on the French though ;)

Thats why I never really have a problem with the UK being so close to America - as the saying goes, I'd rather America on the inside of the tent weeing out than on the outside of the tent weeing in. :D

Scuse the vulgarity :p
